How to upgrade gear in Forspoken, including Cloaks, Necklaces and Nails explained

The team at Forspoken is an important part of your time at Athia. Having the right equipment equipped can help make your time fighting enemies a little easier.

Each Gear item can have its own benefits including stamina, health, defense, and healing boosts. Using capes, necklaces, and spikes is one of the best ways to adjust Frey’s abilities to how you want them to be.

Upgrading equipment in Forspoken is also important. Some items can be acquired with some solid stats, but most of the time you’re better off upgrading an item, especially if you like it. Here, we’ll explain what Gear is, how to upgrade all types, and where you can find more.

In this page:

Check out 7 things you need to know about Forspoken.

Layers in Forspoken

Your first piece of equipment, a hooded cloak, is given to you after meeting a character named Auden in Cipal. After this, you will have unlocked ‘Capes’, which is one of the three types of equipment you can collect.

Each layer has skills and advantages that can be extremely useful in helping you survive while fighting enemies in Athia.

How to equip cloaks

To equip a cape, go to the ‘Equipment’ menu. This can be found on the same screen as your Map, Inventory, and Resources (among others).

When you are on the screen shown above, select the ‘Hide’ option. You will then be taken to a screen that shows you the Cloaks you have in your inventory and the one you have equipped (if you have one).

On this screen, hover over the cape you want to use to see its stats and perks on the left of the screen. This is important to pay attention to if you want to upgrade specific parts of Frey’s abilities and strength.

Then, when you’re ready, highlight the cape you want to use and press the command indicated to equip it to Frey.

Necklaces in Forspoken

Necklaces are another piece of equipment that can be equipped to Frey to improve certain stats and abilities. Different necklaces have different stats and power-ups, so it’s worth collecting a few.

How to equip necklaces

To equip a new necklace in Forspoken, you need to head to the ‘Equipment’ menu. This is the same menu you use to equip capes.

When you are on the ‘Gear’ screen, select the ‘Necklace’ option on the right. This will open another screen showing you all the necklaces you have in your inventory, including the one you have equipped.

Hover over each necklace to see its statistics appear on the left of the screen. Once you’ve decided which one you want to use, highlight it and use the indicated command to equip it to Frey.

Nails in Forspoken

Spikes are unlocked when you enter the Guild to search for Auden’s father’s journals.

Spikes are a piece of equipment that can enhance Frey’s abilities. The Tanta are said to paint symbols on their nails with their own blood to enhance their powers, and Cuff discovered that Frey can do the same by collecting Break Shards.

How to apply nails

You can access your Nails by entering the ‘Nails’ submenu in the menu that includes the map, your inventory, and more. Open the ‘Nails’ menu and you will see a screen like this:

General and forgotten nail menu

Here you can see which spikes you currently have equipped. You can have different designs on your right and left hand, or you can choose to apply the same design on both.

To apply or change your nails, click on the hand you want to equip the design on and you will end up on this screen:

At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see which layouts you can use. Hover over a design and the list of materials you need will appear on the left of the screen. A description of the design and what it does will appear to the right.

Simply click on the design you want to use and follow the command prompted to apply it to that hand.

Note: Nails cannot be updated.

Forspoken has arrived and we have boss strategies to help you defeat Tanta Sila, Tanta Prav, Senseless Savant and the final boss. However, before taking on these bosses, you may want to learn how to craft, upgrade your equipment, and find all the Blessing Fountains. Meanwhile, understanding fast travel and clearing monuments will also help you on Fray’s journey through Athia.

How to find more gear in Forspoken

You can find new gear in Forspoken in several ways, but the quickest is by visiting a merchant. They are scattered throughout the settlements of Athia and you can trade Poppets (small collectible wooden dolls) for any items they carry.

You can also find more equipment, such as spikes, by exploring the landscape around you. Venturing into ruins, mazes, and just taking a look at the area you’re in can give you more gear for your collection.

How to update Gear in Forspoken

To upgrade your gear in Forspoken, you need to visit a crafting bank or set up camp. The easiest way to find a craft bank is to visit a pilgrim shelter.

When you are at a crafting bench or a camp, you will see two options. Click ‘Update’ to start the update process for your computer. This can be for equipment that is currently equipped and equipment that is stored.

Forspoken Crafting and Crafting Menu

Select which item you want to upgrade, a cape or a necklace. All you need to do now is select an upgrade slot to place the upgrade and then choose which upgrade you want to apply to it. You will be able to choose this once you click on an upgrade slot.

Once you’ve chosen your update, follow the command prompted to apply it to that slot. Then, you should see the stats for that piece of equipment change according to the upgrade.

Equipment upgrade limitations

There are a limited number of upgrade slots for each piece of equipment.

If you want to upgrade a piece of equipment that has full upgrade slots, you will need to remove one of the existing upgrades and add a new one. You can do this by clicking update on the space you want to replace. then use the update menu to select the one you want to replace.

For this layer, the upgrade slots are now filled.

If you have the correct amount of materials, the new upgrade will replace the previous one in that slot.

The more you explore, the more equipment you will find. Enjoy searching more in Athia!
