How to complete Devious Thievery in Destiny 2

Devious Theory is one of several King’s Fall raid challenges in Destiny 2.

The optional challenge, which appears during the Warpriest encounter, which is the first full boss of the raid, during select weeks, complicates what can be a difficult encounter in itself.

This page explains the requirements for Devious Theory, as well as some tips on how to complete the King’s Fall challenge and get some extra rewards for your troubles.

What is devious theft in Destiny 2?

The conditions of the Devious Thievery Raid Challenge are simple. Whenever a Fireteam member picks up the Brand Claimer orb, he must steal the Initiate’s Aura within five seconds.

It doesn’t matter when the Blightguard holding the Brand Claimer dies, only when the orb is picked up.

This must happen every time the Brand Claimer is collected, and a single error means the challenge has failed.

Tips for completing Devious Thievery in Destiny 2

The Warpriest encounter in Destiny 2 is primarily a test of your team’s ability to deal damage to the boss. Once all three plates are activated, a luminous sphere called the Initiate’s Aura forms, and your party must fire from inside it to damage the War Priest.

The Aura has a countdown timer that resets when a member of your squad kills a Blightguard, picks up the Brand Claimer orb this knight dropped, and uses it to take the Initiate’s Aura.

This happens twice in each damage phase. This is where the five second time limit for taking the Aura comes into play.

The Blightguards will appear near the first two plates that activate, and the challenge timer does not start until the Brand Claimer is collected.

With this in mind, there are two good strategies to achieve rapid aura change:

  • First, you can have the person with the Initiate’s Aura move toward the Brand Claimer orb, bringing the damage-dealing team with him. This allows the person picking up the Brand Claimer to wait until the last possible second to pick it up and then immediately steal the Aura.
  • The second option is to always deal damage to the boss from the center of the room and have the players hunting the Blightguards lure them as close to the center as possible before killing them. Then, wait until the person with the aura approaches the five seconds remaining on their timer, grab the Brand Claimer, and run to grab the aura.

Experiment which approach works best for your team and completing the challenge and earning the loot should be within your reach.
