This week’s Featured Hour is all about the aptly named Owl Pokémon, making it the perfect time to catch a perfect Hoothoot in Pokémon Go.
While Hoothoot can be pretty trashy in raids and competitive play, its evolution, Noctowl, sees Great League and Ultra League use in Pokémon Go. However, the real draw of this week’s Spotlight Hour is the special bonus that runs alongside the event: the Double Evolution XP Bonus.

Hoothoot IV Stats 100% Perfect in Pokémon Go
This week’s Featured Hour is a great opportunity to catch a Hoothoot with perfect IV stats.
Bravo! Bravo.
“Perfect” means two things in Pokémon Go, depending on how you plan to use a given Pokémon. First, there’s the max build, 100% IV, which is the 15/15/15 you’re looking for for your 4* Pokédex, Raids, and Master League. However, because of how CP is calculated using three stats, a perfect Pokémon IV is usually just the best version of itself in the Master League.
Of course, you can’t see a Pokémon’s IV without catching it first, but with a little research beforehand, you can quickly spot a perfect Hoothoot based on CP alone.
If you’re at level 30 (or higher), you’ll ideally be looking for the following CPs for a perfect Hoothoot 15/15/15:
The wild CP value aligns with your trainer level until you reach level 30, and since the majority of the player base is now above this level, we’ve kept these values for the sake of simplicity. However, these values will be different if you are currently below level 30.
Is Noctowl good at PvP?
It’s not bad in the Great League and it’s good in the Ultra League, it’s terrible in the Master League. Either way, you’re looking at the following moveset: Wing Attack, Sky Attack, and Shadow Ball as a second charged move.
Noctowl.
Noctowl is a bulky Pokémon with a perfectly reasonable moveset: a fast-charging move turned into a cheap charged move, both with STAB damage, can hit pretty hard. The Shadow Ball for cover is also a nice addition, giving you a nuke that you can hit to defeat the likes of Trevenant and Medicham Great League. Sableye, Scrafty, and Swampert are also on the list of Pokémon you can beat in this league, while Altaria, Nidoqueen, Galarian Stunfisk, and Azumarill are Pokémon that will give you trouble.
The problem is simply its CP range: a perfect 15/15/15 Noctowl caps out at 2288 CP, meaning it’s eligible for the Ultra League, but you’ll have to sink a batch of Stardust into a Pokémon with diminishing returns.
Noctowl still beats Tevenant, with interesting wins against Giratina, Cresselia, and Scrafty, but loses heavily to Walrein, Talonflamem Nidoqueen, Swampert, and Obstagoon. The further we get from being able to hit the CP ceiling, the more apprehensive we should be about running it.
So, Master League? Interestingly, you’ll still be able to beat everything you beat before thanks to Shadow Ball doing the heavy lifting, but who’s going to go to Master League looking for Trevenant counters? Do yourself a favor and give the bird a rest.

You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
Is there a shiny Hoothoot in Pokémon Go?
Yeah! Released on New Year’s Eve 2021, there is a shiny Hoothoot in Pokémon Go. Interestingly, this was only in the form of Hoothoot disguised as shiny, which cannot evolve. The normal shiny Hoothoot (and therefore the shiny Noctowl) arrived a few days later, on January 4, 2022.

Spotlight Hours, unlike Community Days, do not have an enhanced brightness rate, so when you search for a shiny Hoothoot, you will do so with the usual brightness rates in this work. This means that if you really want a brilliant Hoothoot, you should make the most of this hour!
What does shiny Hoothoot look like?
As you can see, the shiny Hoothoot takes on a beautiful shiny gold color, while the shiny Noctowl keeps the gold, but with a slightly darker tone. All in all, they are both quite pretty!

Other tips for this hour of attention
Besides trying to catch a shiny, perfect Hoothoot in Pokémon Go, there are a couple of other good reasons to participate in this week’s Spotlight. The vast majority of players who show up for this Featured Hour will undoubtedly do so to enjoy the special one-hour bonus below:
- The best reason is, of course, the double evolution XP bonus that runs throughout the hour. This gives you the opportunity to accumulate a lot of XP very quickly, so you can increase your trainer level. The best way to do this is to have two tags in your Pokémon storage dedicated to this time. The first is the things you want to evolve and keep (usually strong Pokémon and Pokémon you need to evolve to update your Pokédex) and the things you want to evolve and transfer. This second box should contain all of the 12 candy Pokémon. The search string to quickly find all of these rated less than 3* is: 0*,1*,2*&10,13,16,265,293,519&!shiny
- If you’re a newcomer, this Featured Hour is the perfect time to collect enough Hoothoot Candies to fully evolve this Pokémon and record its evolution, Noctowl, in your Pokédex.
- Since Hoothoot is a Normal and Flying-type Pokémon, capturing a bunch during this Spotlight Hour will add progress to your Normal and Flying-type capture bonus medal.
Remember: Spotlight Hour events only last one hour: from 6 pm to 7 pm (local time).
