Offshore or freighter? Best Merryweather Heist Approach Explained
When it comes to choosing Offshore or Freighter in The Merryweather Heist, it only affects how the trio collects the device because no money is made. In short, choose the option that seems most interesting to you.
That said, there are different gold medal goals to meet for each approach, and we explain the best crew and getaway options further down the page.

If he chooses Offshore, Trevor suggests that Michael increase his flying skills. This request is optional and the heist can be completed without any additional effort.

This heist is simple and does not require much strategy to escape.
If taking the Offshore approach, Franklin must ensure that all targets are taken down as quickly as possible. If you take the Freighter’s approach, your skill with the sniper rifle will determine whether you survive.
High Seas Walkthrough for The Merryweather Heist in GTA 5
Choosing Offshore requires completing two missions before The Merryweather Heist: Cargobob and Minisub.
When you’re ready, Trevor must steal a cargobob so he can transport the Submersible to the ocean.
Using the submersible, Trevor searches for the device on the ocean floor and picks it up. Michael then uses the cargobob to lift the submersible with the device attached.
As Michael flies back to shore, they are attacked by Merryweather mercenaries by land, air, and sea. Michael must continue flying while Franklin protects the cargobob by shooting at Merryweather’s helicopters and ground vehicles.
If successful, Michael will fly the cargobob and submersible back to Sandy Shores Airfield. At the airfield, they meet Lester and Floyd. Lester tells them they have to return the device. Trevor reluctantly agrees and the team makes no money from the heist.

Freighter walkthrough for The Merryweather Heist in GTA 5
Choosing Freighter only requires completing one mission before The Merryweather Heist: Minisub can begin.
In this approach, the trio plans to blow up a freighter so they can loot the secret device from a shipping container.
This approach begins when Michael boards the freighter and places sticky bombs all over the deck. While Michael plants the bombs, Franklin protects him from a high point with a sniper rifle.
After Michael successfully plants all the sticky bombs, Franklin is attacked by Merryweather troops and a helicopter. He must survive the attack before they can blow up the freighter. Using the night vision sight during the gunfight will help you see all the gunmen.
Once the bombs detonate, Michael dives into the ocean to locate the device. Trevor then uses the submersible to pick up the device and take it to a safe location along the coast.
As they exit their vehicles, they encounter Lester and Floyd. Lester tells them they have to return the device. Trevor reluctantly agrees and the team makes no money from the heist.
