How to prepare for Tanta Prav in Forspoken
You will fight Tanta Prav in Chapter 8 of Forspoken. In fact, the entire chapter is dedicated to this fight from the moment it begins, so you’ll need to be prepared before concluding Chapter 7.
In Chapter 7, you will search for Ballow Resin in Avoalet. When you’ve found enough in one of the Ballow trees, you’ll receive a message warning you that the story will move forward. This will be your chance to create healing drafts or upgrade your spells with Mana (if you forget, you’ll still be able to access the Magic Menu during the fight).
You will not only fight Tanta Prav but also her minions, who are vulnerable to fire magic, so it is recommended to upgrade Sila’s Magic if you haven’t already. Upgrading Arc Slice to Lv. 3 is ideal for close range attacks, although a good ranged attack is equally important, so upgrading Blast Slice will also be beneficial. If you are short on mana, remember that you can convert any Frey magic into mana and use these points instead. Alternatively, you continue searching for mana reserves or completing optional quests and challenges in Athia.
Once you’re ready, return to the tree with the story landmark and a cutscene will take you to Avoalet Castle, where Prav’s servants will tie you up before escorting you to the castle to apparently stand trial for the murder of Tanta Sila, taking us to the Chapter. 8.
How to pass the water test in Forspoken
As mentioned, facing Tanta Prav in Forspoken is not a typical boss fight. She will have Frey put on trial, although this is not like the courts Frey is used to in New York, in practice it is more of a show trial built into a scene that will eventually have you fighting for your life instead of proving your innocence. .
Finally, Prav sends Frey to a large water bubble, which actually houses a round arena where you will face a water test, which will essentially have you face waves of enemies.
The first wave are Prav’s enforcers, four of them appear around Frey. They are bow users who focus on ranged attacks, but can also jump into the air to avoid your melee attacks. In any case, they are easy to defeat with fire magic, so take each one out one by one up close.
The second wave will have Frey again in the center as two rings of mountain goats appear around you. There are more enemies than the first wave, but you can also get them closer, so attacks that can hit multiple enemies like Arc Slice are useful, as is upgrading your attacks with Crucible.
For the third wave, Prav summons more of his henchmen, this time a mix of his bow-wielding enforcers and two arbiters, wielding the scales of judgment in one hand and an ax in the other.
Try not to get too close, as their axes can hit hard, and when they kneel, they will charge a deadly ice-based AOE, which is your cue to back away. Arbiters are also resistant to your spells from the front, so you’ll want to go around them to hit them from behind. To manage crowds, it can also be helpful to call in your own help with Legion.
Once the referees are down, taking down the archers should be as easy as before, except you’ll notice that some are also stationed on the balcony above. Switch to Blast Slice and make sure you’re focused on the archers. Then hold and release R2 to throw a magic spear at them. They will be vulnerable to fire damage once the spear explodes moments after finding its target. Some of these will be enough to take down every archer.
Once you’ve made it through this wave, get ready for the real test.
How to defeat Tanta Prav in Forspoken
Despite passing the test in the water, Tanta Prav is not so fair after all, her angry and oppressive side is still determined to execute you. So now is the time to fight it.
Prav flies into the arena and his main attack is a large explosion of water that appears as powerful as a huge beam of magic. The good news is that she has a long charge animation for this and the attack also lasts a good couple of seconds, so it’s very easy to get around her and then attack Arc Slices up close from behind. You can deal a lot of damage with two of these attacks, enough to stagger her and deliver a fatal blow.
With approximately two-thirds of his health bar remaining, Prav floats higher into the air for his next phase. To attack her now, you’ll need a ranged spell, so switch to Blast Slice and charge up spears to throw at her. This is actually an easy phase since she seems to be distracted, rambling while she sends ice magic to the water ceiling above (well, technically, you’re actually on the ceiling this whole time).
You can continue the offensive until you notice icicles producing above you, and at some point they will all collapse. You can try to come back when this happens, use Screen from Frey’s Magic, or just make sure you have a healing eraser on hand. In our case, we find that damaging Prav enough here will also cause her to fall again, leaving her open to another killing blow, which will restore Frey’s health anyway. In any case, you should be able to deal a lot of damage that will take away another third of Prav’s health before he tries to charge up more icicles.
For his final phase, Prav uses his powers to grab Frey in the air and throw her into the water, which also returns us to the arena’s original orientation. You will be floating in the water with circular platforms around you, but, since you are helpless in the water, quickly swim towards a platform before Prav starts attacking him, as he still has quite a few tricks up his sleeve.
Prav flies at higher speeds casting ice magic at you. He will also re-charge his deadly water beam from his first phase. Since you no longer have room to run around her, it’s best to keep your distance on a safe platform and then lock on her to throw more Blast Slice spears at her.
Prav can also trap Frey in a water bubble suspended in the air, during this time you cannot move or hit it. She’ll send bubbles towards you dealing damage, until she drops you back into the water and follows up with a nasty ice attack from above that lands in the center of the arena before spreading outwards.
While Frey can’t do anything inside the bubble, he can still pop the attack bubbles with Arc Slice, and the moment you’re dropped, immediately swim to a platform to safety before the water freezes. While you’re on the platform, the ice attack that follows shouldn’t hit you.
In addition to this, Prav also summons a sphere of water that expands and then explodes. Cuff will advise you to destroy the sphere, although we discovered that you can still throw Blast Slices at Prav and, if you keep a safe distance, you won’t get caught in the explosion.
Another move that Prav has is to summon water to shoot from several of the platforms, which launches you into the air, although the water itself does not harm you. The platforms are also telegraphed beforehand so you can easily jump to a different, unaffected platform and simply continue your ranged spell attacks.
All of these moves, along with Prav’s greater maneuverability, make her harder to hit, as well as making this phase a bit longer than the others, but just avoid and counter her tricks, and attack when you have an opening and the So much. She will soon be stopped in her tracks.
