Elden Ring: The best rune farming spots and locations

Farming Elden Ring runes helps you quickly obtain a large amount of world currency, which is used to level up, purchase items, or upgrade your equipment.

They are obtained by defeating enemies or as items collected throughout the world, and you will also drop everything you are carrying if you die.

While the greater freedom to run away from combat can put you at risk of being underleveled, it also means that it’s easier to choose battles that guarantee more runes will drop at a fast and steady rate.

You may be tempted to focus on the trolls, who can be intimidating but also provide 1000 runes when taken down, or choose a location with a high concentration of targets, although keep in mind that it’s easy to get overwhelmed by a crowd.

This page covers some of the best places to farm Elden Ring runes in the entire game, which will make your journey in the Between Lands much easier.

Elden Ring Side Quests for Beginners – Side Quests You Need to Do

Elden Ring Rune Farming Location in Stormhill

The first and quickest farming location to farm runes is Stormhill, just west of Limgrove, which can be accessed as soon as you have access to the horse Torrent after first meeting Melina at a Siege of Grace.

While it might be safer to fight the two chained trolls pulling the caravan (and the enemies behind it) when traveling through West Limgrave on the main path to the Gatefront, there is one place where you can fight five trolls at once, which will give you a total of 5,000 runes (1,000 runes per troll).

To reach this part of Stormhill, follow the cliff face along the east of the Grace Gatefront Site and you will come to a draft that Torrent can jump over to reach the top of Stormhill.

Be careful, the trolls are quite intimidating and hit hard, especially when you are at a low level, and once you have lost half their health, they will stop hitting you with their arms and draw the sword from their back. In short, this is not safe agricultural management at all.

Your option is to take them on one at a time or bait them two at a time. Since the trolls’ attacks can hurt each other, you can try using Torrent to turn them around while their arms and then their swords do the work for you.

This comes with a risk, however, because if you travel too far, the trolls can unleash a roaring wind attack that can knock you off your steed and leave you stunned for a dangerous period of time. We do not recommend baiting all five trolls at once! However, on your first attempt, be sure to provoke a troll into destroying a statue in the area to collect six smithing stones (1) that will help you start upgrading your weapon.

Elden Ring Rune Farming Location in Caelid

Even though Caelid is a scary area to travel to early on, it also has the best and most fun place to farm Elden Ring runes, and it is possible to get there early on, although it requires a little more work, and we recommend Unlock Horse Torrent First.

To get to Caelid quickly, east of Limgrave, but to get there quickly, head to the Dragon-Burnt Ruins south of Lake Agheel, which is near the beginning of the game. There you will find steps that will take you under the ruins with some rats. Kill them and open the door ahead to find a treasure chest.

However, this is a tricky chest and when you open it, smoke will appear, transporting you inside the Sellia Crystal Tunnel, from which you will not be able to quickly exit until you have escaped.

Naturally, the enemies here are fairly high level, including some that can cast strong magic spells, but you can exit by following a path down to where you’ll find the tunnel’s Site of Grace. From here, follow the path until you discover that you are north of Caelid under an eerie blood red sky.

While you can explore the area at your own risk, we recommend continuing south from where you are to other Gracia Sites, which will make the trip a little more manageable. Riding Torrent will also help you, especially since you will probably cross some swamps that will inflict Scarlet Rot on you if you try to cross them on foot.

Once you’ve reached southern Caelid, you’ll find a Site of Grace for the Great Impassible Bridge, which leads to Castle Redmane in the southeast. Next to this Site of Grace is where you will find your cultivation place.

You may have encountered the terrifying giant dogs on the way here, but in this area you will find three of them feasting on corpses, unaware that there is a group of soldiers about to start an ambush. You can just sit in a hidden spot and watch the fight between soldiers and dogs unfold, and you’ll automatically get runes back from anyone who dies.

However, dogs are only worth about 300 runes each, while soldiers always triumph in numbers. The trick then is to enter combat and slowly eliminate the soldiers who are focused on the dogs and therefore vulnerable to backstabs.

If any soldiers start targeting you, simply bait one of the dogs, or better yet, ride Torrent or summon an ash spirit to help you. You can even bait four more dogs just north of this area to continue the slaughter, which will rack up even more runes.

Assuming you don’t get killed during the skirmish, you should be able to get around 5,000 or 6,000 runes per run. A Marika’s Stake is also available, so if you get killed for any reason, you’ll be able to return for another attempt at running the farm. Just remember to pick up any runes you dropped!

Once you’ve decided on a starting class and a starting keepsake item, you first need to figure out how to level up, how to respec, and how to use Ashes of War. Do you need any directions from there? Our Elden Ring walkthrough and Elden Ring boss order can help you know where to go next, but we also recommend looking for Golden Seeds, Sacred Tears, Crystal Tears, Talismans, and some of our top weapon and armor picks. If you are nearing the end of the game, we can help you with the Volcano Manor and Rykard quest, the Haligtree Secret Medallion locations, solving Ordina, the Liturgical Town puzzle, Millicent’s quest, Commander Niall, Morgott, Godskin Duo , Maliketh and Malenia.

Elden Ring Rune Farming Location in Windmill Village

By far the easiest place to farm runes in Elden Ring, Windmill Village has a Midsommar vibe, as all the villagers are under some sort of spell and dance happily, oblivious to your presence. It also means that none of them react to your presence until you start attacking, and even then it’s only those in the same immediate vicinity.

This agricultural place is located on the Altus Plateau, which can be reached after traveling through Liurnia. As the name suggests, you’ll want to look for windmills in the north of the region.

Since you will be approaching from the southwest of Altus Plateau, you will want to enter the Outer Wall and then follow the path North until you reach the Outer Wall Battlefield Site of Grace. Here you will find a gate that will take you to the northernmost part of the region, where you will find Windmill Village.

The only thing you’ll have to watch out for in the village is a couple of mad dogs that will notice you, while if you go too high you’ll encounter a tough boss (a Marika’s Stake) who will give you clues. about when you should stop. Otherwise, once you’ve eliminated all the villagers, you’ll earn around 6,500 runes in one run.

On the other hand, since the villagers are quite widely spaced (although just follow the sound of their singing to find them), a more optimal method is to focus only on the first two groups of the Sitio de Gracia.

The first group is made up of only three villagers, while the second is a bit larger, so you might run the risk of being overwhelmed, but you’ll get over 3000 runes from these alone in less than a minute, and then you can simply run back. or fast travel to the Site of Grace, then rinse and repeat as necessary.

Elden Ring Rune Farming Site in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree

This rune farming location is the most difficult to access, as you must head to Haligtree, a completely optional part of the map that is not tied to the story path west of the giant mountaintops.

Just getting to Haligtree requires opening a secret path by following Latenna the Albinauric’s questline and facing some very difficult bosses along the way, but when you reach the city beneath it, Elphael, you’ve basically arrived at Farmville Central.

The enemies here drop thousands of runes, even the most basic grunts, and if you’ve been upgrading your weapon, two or three strong attacks will be enough to kill them.

From the Prayer Hall’s Place of Grace, simply follow the path to a balcony and you will find a soldier looking at it with his back to you. After that there is a soldier who wields a sword, but carries a torch on his other arm to be open to your attacks, while two grunts appear behind him and will blow themselves up.

Continuing on, you can take out another soldier sitting on the balcony, which then alerts two soldiers at the other end. However, they are also easy to take down since their shields are quite weak. This group alone will get you over 17,000 runes!

Of course, when you’ve reached this point, you’ll probably also need a lot more runes to level up. Either way, this will definitely make any late grind a lot easier and will hopefully alleviate those times when a careless death cost you a ton of runes.

Good luck farming runes in Elden Ring!
