Dying Light 2 windmills: How to activate windmills and all windmill locations in Dying Light 2

Windmills are scattered throughout the decaying city of old Villedor in Dying Light 2, as they are the main source of energy for citizens struggling to survive after the zombie apocalypse.

When you activate a windmill in Dying Light 2, you immediately open up a whole new mini-settlement of sorts, where survivors can come and set up shops and a hideout for you to use your weapons and items.

This is easier said than done, however, as you’ll first have to climb the windmill to activate it, and there are plenty of windmill locations to find.

How to find and activate windmills in Dying Light 2

As you may have noticed in Dying Light 2, the city of Villedor is not in the best shape. Their people are scattered and scared, and your job is to rally them and give them something to fight for again.

This is partially done by unlocking the windmills, as citizens can use the energy generated by the landmarks to power ultraviolet lights, protecting them at night from the horrors roaming the city.

To locate a windmill in Dying Light 2, climb to the top of a building, where you’ll have a decent view of the surrounding hundred meters on all sides. Next, equip your binoculars and use them to mark the windmills on the horizon of your map. Once marked with binoculars, icons like Windmills will remain on your map for the rest of the game.

Before tackling the windmill, a useful tip. Using your binoculars again, focus on the windmill icon you want to unlock. If the icon is white, you have enough strength and tools to unlock it. But if it’s red, it means you haven’t raised your stamina enough to climb the windmill and conquer it. For that, you will need to find more inhibitor locations.

Upon reaching a viable windmill, you will see a Parkour challenge of sorts. Your job is to reach the upper platform of the windmill, right next to the machine’s rotating blades, and to do so, you must conquer whatever challenges await you below. Windmills will frequently ask you to jump between moving platforms, for example, so you’ll have to be quick with your climbing skills to overcome the challenge.

Once you’ve reached the top of the windmill, you simply need to interact with the power box to power it up. This is not like power plants, where you can assign the building to the Survivor or Peacekeeper factions.

Instead, all you need to do is turn on the windmill in the power box and the rest will be done for you.

This is equivalent to an entire mini-settlement being established in a few seconds. Once the windmill is active, you’ll have a base of operations complete with merchants, UV lights, a bed to rest on, and a hideout to store your belongings. Windmills are essential for night operations in Dying Light 2, and are even quite useful in broad daylight, giving you a place to stop and recover.
