The Destiny 2 Rat King exotic firearm is a fascinating little weapon with some very interesting effects.
As with many exotic items, it is a challenge to unlock, as the item’s quest requires you to solve several puzzles (and complete sometimes complicated tasks) in order to obtain it.
So, here on this page, we’ll walk you through how to get the Rat King, including help with solutions to the Rat King puzzles and an explanation of how to get the Rat King’s Crew item to start it all off.

It’s also worth noting that taking on this quest is one of the few ways to help you reach Destiny 2’s maximum level cap, as it increases with whatever level you’re currently at. The link above explains more, but the longer you wait to do the mission, the higher the weapon level will be.
How to get the Destiny 2 Rat King weapon
Like many of Destiny 2’s exotics, Rat King requires you to complete a special quest, which involves several steps, some of which are hidden behind rather obscure puzzles.
It’s worth it though, as the Rat King has some awesome perks: an increase in damage, which stacks up to six times, depending on the number of other allies who have the weapon equipped nearby; and a second or two of invisibility, granted each time you reload immediately after killing with the weapon.
It’s extremely useful, especially when you imagine six Guardians using it together, so with that in mind, here’s how to get it!
How to get the Rat King in Destiny 2:
- Complete the main story and reach level 20; This unlocks the Enemy of My Enemy quest on Titan.
- Complete the Enemy of My Enemy mission: This is a blue mission marker that you will find in the world and on your map, which ends with the option to kill or save an enemy captain. Either way, when you complete it, you’ll get the Rat King’s Crew item. The item occupies a kinetic weapon slot, but cannot be used as such.
- In Rat King’s Crew you will find a strange riddle. This is, in fact, the first of four puzzles, and you will have to solve them and then complete their respective tasks, one at a time, to get the weapon. Read on for detailed solutions to these in the section below!
Sounds simple enough! Aside from the obvious amount of time you’ll need to spend completing the story, which is necessary for many Destiny 2 Exotics anyway, a lot of this is pretty simple.

Solutions to the Destiny 2 Rat King puzzles and how to get the Rat King step by step
So the steps sound pretty simple, right? Finish the story, complete a mission, solve some puzzles and get a cool weapon. If only it were that simple. Those puzzles are a little difficult to solve to begin with, but they’re also not too easy to finish, at least the last one. Here’s what they mean and how to complete them:
Solutions to the Rat King riddle:
- “The Rat King’s crew runs around, good boys and girls know where to go, they pick up your toys and put on your socks, on errands of woe, on errands we walk” – Complete three patrol missions with a team of at least one other Guardian. To do this, you must complete the patrol mission, given by Cayde in the EDZ after you have finished the main story quest line. Then two missions Any patrol squad will do, as long as there is at least one other Guardian in your Fireteam.
- “The Rat King’s crew goes arm in arm, to fight as one, to do no harm, so have fun and run outside, raise the flag and we’ll never die.” – Complete two public events with a team of at least one other guardian; this is one of the simplest steps. Simply head to any public event with a team and continue.
- “The Rat King’s Crew go four and four, with good fights they learn to score, then three as one stand tall, come back from passing the wall and want more.” – Complete two Crucible matches with a Fireteam of at least one other Guardian – again, very simple. Head to the Crucible with your Fireteam and move on! Both Quickplay and Competitive will work.
- “The Rat King’s crew form three as one, they see the nightfall and fear it not, but watch the clock as you scale the wall, lest there be five left, hope comes to none.” – Complete Nightfall Strike with at least five minutes left, and this is where it gets difficult. This requires most players several tries, because having at least five minutes left on the clock, even if you can stop its progress, is not easy. feat. Our advice is to wait until a week where you can comfortably complete it without worrying about the clock, and then run it over and over again, refining your approach until you get it done. Having the highest level possible also helps, so Make sure you get as close to the maximum power level cap as Fireteam. Good luck!
The Rat King’s crew will appear to the right every time you complete one of his steps, and likewise, as soon as you finish the final step of completing Nightfall with at least five minutes left, he will be instantly available as the Rat King Exotic. hand weapon
