Destiny 2 Exorcism mission bugged: What to do when Severing the Worm is not completing

Destiny 2’s Exorcism mission is the long-awaited finale to Season of the Lost.

Debuting in the final weekly reset before Year 5 arrives, it concludes the story the season has been building toward: defending Mara Sov against the forces of Xivu Arath while extracting the Witch Queen’s worm.

Update (February 18, 6pm UK): Bungie has said it will automatically advance players to the second step of Severing the Worm for those currently stuck on the buggy first step of the quest, meaning the issue The main problem most players encounter has been resolved. Once that’s done, it’s time to wait for the release of Witch Queen…

Where to find and start the Exorcism quest

To begin the season-ending Exorcism quest, visit the HELM and check the Wayfinder Compass. You will then choose a mission objective: Cut the Worm.

From here, visit Dreaming City and find the node on the right side. This will then pair you up with other players to begin the Exorcism quest.

Destiny 2 Exorcism Bugs Explained

Unfortunately, Exorcism has multiple bugs that prevent players from completing the quest, viewing the ending cutscene, and/or progressing through the quest.

The main problem is that players can skip the final cutscene. This will skip it for all players and return them all to the menu. This means that players cannot see how the story is resolved, which is arguably the point of playing the mission in the first place.

Maybe this isn’t technically a bug, just an oversight on Bungie’s part, but also, whether you skip the cutscene or not, in many cases the quest doesn’t progress. Some players have said that replaying the quest progresses the quest, while Nits_shnitz on reddit suggested deleting the quest, retrieving it from the Tower, and then rerunning it may work, but success is not guaranteed.

In addition to this, another bug is that players can get stuck on the bridge during the “Reach the Needle” step. Bungie has acknowledged this, as well as asking the community not to skip the cutscene and disabling the ability to join a mission mid-session through matchmaking, saying that players should progress across the bridge slowly or “backtrack if they are blocked”.

What can you do with Destiny 2’s buggy Exorcism quest?

Update (February 18, 6pm UK): Bungie has said it will automatically advance players to the second step of Severing the Worm for those currently stuck on the buggy first step of the quest:

Update: We have automatically completed the first step of the Severing The Worm quest for the Exorcism quest for all players. Players will now be asked to speak to Mara Sov at the HELM to continue the quest from step 2. https://t.co/V096Wy3Ibk

Original article: There are two solutions that could help with the mission debut problems:

  • If you want to see the final cutscene of the game, play the Exorcism mission with a team of six players. This saves you from playing with a random player who might decide to skip the cutscene. Otherwise, you can just watch it online; See the next section for a recommended video.
  • Repeat the mission until it works. Since it seems like the mission may not progress whether you watch the cutscene or not, all you can do is replay it until it works. That’s the official line from developer Bungie, which says “you may have to play multiple times to complete the mission.” That suggests there won’t be a solution before the Witch Queen next week, so it’s a matter of trying your luck until it works.

Our advice? The rewards, listed below, aren’t worth it unless you’re a completionist, so save yourself the trouble and watch the online cutscene, also below.

Destiny 2 exorcism scene

For those who don’t want to wait to see the scene themselves, Esoterickk on YouTube has posted footage of all the mission scenes, including the skippable final scene:

The Season of the Depths is here along with the Into the Depths quest. You can also know how to go fishing! Don’t forget to keep an eye on the Lost Sector and King’s Fall challenge rotation schedule!

Destiny 2 Exorcism Rewards

The rewards for completing the Exorcism quest and the Cut the Worm quest are primarily triumphs. Once the mission is over, (if you’re not bugged) you’ll get some random loot and a completed triumph.

From there, you must visit Mara Sov in the Helm, then Saint-14, completing the quest line and granting yourself a Triumph.

Once this is done, don’t forget to visit the helm to listen to the final radio message on the console next to the Wayfinder’s compass, which will help you complete the history book and the associated Triumph. According to BlowTongue on reddit, it may take a while to complete, so be sure to wait once the message finishes.

Finally, if you were expecting the Centrefire Exotic ship to be a reward for completing the quest and quest, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

This means that, at the moment, there is still no way to obtain it; Bungie is looking for a way to give it to players in the future.
