How to get Cabal Gold in Destiny 2

Cabal Gold is a resource that appears when completing many activities in the game.

Unlike Season of the Hunt’s lure loadouts, Cabal Gold appears in a wide variety of locations, and not just playlist activities. These include:

  • Strike Playlist: Approximately 14 Cabal Gold
  • Crucible matches: approximately 8 Cabal Gold
  • Gambit matches: approximately 8 Cabal Gold
  • Public Events: Approximately 7 Cabal Gold for Heroic
  • Dusk Strikes
  • Dungeons*
  • Raids*
  • Nightmare hunts
  • Cesspool

* A bug at the start of the Season of the Chosen means that Cabal Gold does not disappear from these activities.

As noted, the above are approximate amounts. For example, we got 8 and 9 Cabal Gold by completing a Gambit match, and while Strikes seem to reliably drop 14 Cabal Gold, which is perfect if you want to earn the exact amount to insert the base Medallion into the Hammer. It is possible that this may differ.

Strikes and Gambit drop approximately 14 and 8 Cabal Gold respectively.

In addition to this, you can also unlock additional Cabal Gold drops by completing Battlegrounds events by unlocking the following Hammer upgrades by gaining reputation on the War Table:

  • Tribute Chest 1: Earn 1 Cabal Gold for each Tribute Chest destroyed.
  • Tribute Chest 3: Earn 2 Cabal Gold for each Tribute Chest crushed

Finally, when you complete the Season Challenger Trial introductory mission, you will receive a one-time reward of 28 Cabal Gold:

Cabal Gold cap and Cabal Gold not dropping in Destiny 2 explained

One important thing to know about Cabal Gold is that there is a limit where you will not earn more when you reach it.

Destiny 2: Charging the Hammer of Trial with Cabal Gold

If you find yourself completing activities and Cabal Gold is not dropping, or you see that your Cabal Gold reward is significantly lower than expected, you have likely reached the limit. As such, it’s worth keeping an eye on your Trial Hammer to see how close you are to the cap, then place a Medallion to spend some Cabal Gold so you don’t miss any drops.

The Cabal Gold limit at the beginning of the Season of Trials is 42. It is then possible to increase the Cabal limit with the following Hammer upgrades by gaining reputation on the War Table:

  • Cabal Gold 1: Increases the limit to 56
  • Cabal Gold 2: Increase the limit to 70
  • Cabal Gold 2: Increase the limit to 84

Cabal Gold Farm Recommendations in Destiny 2

If we weigh the sources of Cabal Gold above and the duration of each event, the best sources of Cabal Farm seem to be Crucible matches (about 8) and public heroic events (about 7).

Mayhem and Rumble matches in particular are the quickest Crucible modes to participate in. Completing the first one is particularly useful during the Season of the Chosen, as the Week 1 Season Challenge will rack up kills in the mode.

Similarly, public events are useful for another Week 1 seasonal challenge, Contender’s Rise, in which you must collect rocket launcher kills against the Cabal.

If you visit The Gulch and Winding Cove regions of the EDZ, not only are these public Cabal events faster than most, but the groups of enemies that spawn make it easier to use your rocket launcher rounds.

The Contender’s Rise challenge is also a source of reputation on the War Table, which helps you upgrade your Hammer of Trial.
