Death Stranding Gold items give you an additional bonus when pre-ordering or purchasing special editions of the game.
Although they are purely cosmetic (and there is no way to display them in multiplayer), they can give Sam a different look when making deliveries, so you may want to know exactly when you can unlock them.

How do you unlock special edition items and gold pre-orders in Death Stranding?
First, be sure to redeem the pre-order or special edition code that comes with your copy of the game, then download and install it to unlock it when you launch the game for the first time, as shown in this video from Video Games Source on YouTube. :

As shown above, while some items will be available from the start (the gold hat and gold ‘Sam’ sunglasses), others can be “crafted once the base versions of said items become available.”
Since items will only unlock as you progress through the story, this means that you won’t be able to get the extra reserve gear until you get its “normal” version in-game.
So, bottom line, keep playing and your gold items will arrive when you unlock their standard equivalents.
For example, the following equipment will be unlocked at the following story points:
- Gold Power Skeleton: Episode 3, Order 19 – Evo-devo Unit Delivery: Engineer
- Gold Speed Skeleton: Episode 3, Order 34: Chiral Artist Delivery: Scrap Metal Dealer

There is a pretty elaborate set of bonuses you can get when pre-ordering or purchasing the various editions of Death Stranding. Here’s a breakdown of each.
