Dark Souls Estus Flask locations: How to strengthen your Estus Flask with Fire Keeper Souls

Dark Souls Estus Flasks are nothing less than a lifesaver that allows you to replenish health between bonfires.

Of course, there are a limited number of refills available, but it is possible to increase the power of your collection.

If you’re looking for more help, our Dark Souls walkthrough and guide can help you with all other areas of the game, including the dreaded Taurus Demon, Capra Demon, Ornstein, and Smough bosses.

How to Strengthen Estus Flasks in Dark Souls

To upgrade the strength of your Estus Flask, you will need to obtain a Fire Keeper Soul and give it to a firefighter in Firelink, Anor Londo, or Quelaag’s Domain.

Fire Keeper Souls can only be obtained after killing some Fire Keepers and allowing Lautrec to kill the Firekeeper at Firelink Shrine; It has a high cost and is not an easy pill to swallow. They can be upgraded up to a maximum of +7.

But that is not all. After getting your Estus up to +7, which is the maximum amount whether you’re in your first game or NG+, you may find that 5 Estus Flasks just aren’t enough.

At most bonfires, except Firelink Shrine and Anor Londo, you will only have five flasks when you rest. However, there is a way to strengthen these bonfires and get a maximum of 20 in a given Bonfire.

To do this, you must go through The Catacombs and kill the Pinwheel boss to achieve the Rite of Ignition. Then, at any bonfire, you can strengthen your flasks.

Of course, there is a caveat. Having achieved the Lighting Rite, you will need to return to your Human Form at the bonfire, and only after this will you need to have ‘Soft Humanity’ to further light any bonfire up to three levels.

The first level upgrade will give you 10 Estus Flasks from that bonfire, the second level will give you 15, and the third level will give you 20. Pretty nifty if you find yourself fighting bosses or going through a particularly difficult area.

All you really need to do is choose the bonfires you want to light wisely. We recommend lighting the New Londo Ruins Bonfire, in addition to the Oolacile Township Bonfire.

We recommend trying to get the Rite of Ignition early, before or after completing Sen’s Fortress; you may need extra jars to light those bonfires later.

Estus Flask Locations

The following are in the approximate order that you will find them in the game and will allow you to increase the number of Estus Flasks in your inventory.

Undead Parish: In the Parish hall, you will find a Berenike Knight guarding a Firekeeper Soul lying on a corpse.

New Londo Ruins – This is easy to get and can be obtained early in the game where you can grab it beyond the wooden walkway as you enter and into a building on the right along a small walkway guarded by ghosts – remember to bring your temporary curses for this one.

Blighttown: From the second bonfire, go up the elevator and up a ladder, then cross the narrow wooden bridge and you will see a ladder leading down. There, you’ll want to go down and attack the two fire dogs, and the fire keeper’s soul is inside a cell of a corpse.

Quelaag’s Domain: Obtained after killing The Beautiful Lady (Queelaag’s sister).

Anor Londo: If you follow Lautrec’s story, you can get it after invading and killing him in Anor Londo.

Anor Londo: Appears after killing Lady of the Darkling.

Duke’s Archives: Make sure you have the key to the giant cell in the archives tower; In the room where Logan was, you will find a soul in a corpse.
