In this section of our guide, we’ll cover how to play with people who really want you there, whether that’s teaming up in a co-op game, facing off in PvP, or just hanging out and enjoying the game’s spectacular scenery.

If you want to be invited to another player’s world, the process is as simple as summoning a player. Simply stand where you want to place your summon sign and then use the white sign soapstone to place a co-op marker or the red sign soapstone to place a PvP marker. Note that you cannot leave a summon sign in a boss room, even if you have cleared it.

By the way, if you don’t have them yet, the White Sign Soapstone can be purchased from Firelink Shrine Handmaiden for 500 souls, and the Red Sign Soapstone can be acquired by killing the spellcasting worm located outside Rosaria’s bed chamber in the Cathedral. of the Deep.

Once another player finds and activates your summon signal, you will automatically be transported to their world. Please note that your health bar and Estus Flask count will be reduced (temporarily) upon arrival if you join a cooperative game. But do not spread panic! These changes are made to better balance cooperative play and your stats will return to their original levels once you return to your own world. PvP players, however, do not receive a health reduction when summoned.

If your Estus pool starts to dwindle while you’re in another player’s game, all is not lost. Whenever a ghost dies in that world (whether hostile or friendly), all remaining players will get an Estus Flask refill.

Where to place your call poster

This may seem obvious to Dark Souls pros, but it’s important to consider WHERE you place your summon sign if you’re hoping to be invited to someone else’s game. After all, a summoning sign left in a rarely visited corner of the world is unlikely to attract much attention.

Placement for cooperative

Co-op players in particular should keep this in mind and always place their summon sign in one of two fail-safe locations: either directly outside the boss’s fog door or at the bonfire closest to the boss’s door. , if the approach to the final confrontation is particularly dangerous.

Placement for PvP

However, if you’re looking for PvP action, it’s generally best to leave your sign in a known PvP area. There are no official PvP areas, but popular community locations tend to evolve over time. Currently, for example, most PvP posters can be found near the flooded forest of the Path of Sacrifice and in the area immediately after Pontiff Sulyvahn’s boss battle room in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.

Summoning with friends

Until now we have focused on starting online play with strangers. However, it’s just as easy to set up a multiplayer session with friends in Dark Souls III, and the game’s various matchmaking restrictions (which match you with other players based on your soul and weapon level) do not apply when you use the following method: to team up with friends.

First, open the ‘Settings’ menu and switch to the ‘Online’ tab. Next, locate the box marked “Password Match” and enter the password of your choice. Meanwhile, your friends will need to enter the same password in the same box in their game.

Next, everyone will want to agree on a meeting point in the game and then head there. Upon arrival, non-host players must place their summon tokens (using the white or red token soapstones) and these should appear for use in the host world after a few moments.

However, don’t forget that certain online restrictions still apply, even if you play with friends. For example, hosts can only summon two other cooperative players at a time, unless they have consumed Dried Fingers first. Also, remember that co-op summon signs only appear for hosts if the boss of that area is still alive.

There’s one last thing to consider when trying to co-op throughout the game with friends: since co-op partners automatically return home once the boss dies, you’ll need to follow some very specific steps to continue as a group. When a boss is defeated for the first time and the team disbands, everyone must return to the start of the area. Assign the host role to a new player, then the remaining party members must place summon signs again to join the game. Clear the level and eliminate the boss once again, then repeat the steps with a new host until everyone has completed the area. Finally, you are free to tackle the next location.
