Control Foundation DLC walkthrough: Explore the Foundation and investigate the Nail explained

The Foundation is the first of two DLC expansions for Remedy’s Control.

This new quest allows you to explore The Foundation, the area at the bottom of the Oldest House, to save the Nail, which appears to be a monument connected to the Astral Plane.

However, before you can explore The Foundation, you must first make sure you have completed the main Control story, and if you haven’t, check out our Control walkthrough. It’s also worth knowing how to start both DLC adventures for Control.

Let’s Play Control: The Foundation DLC Game – Rezzed Digital 2020

How to find the door to The Foundation in Control

The Foundation DLC begins with you heading to the Hotline Chamber to speak to the Board.

The easiest way to get to the Hotline Chamber is to fast travel to the Central Executive and then go through the doors north of the Checkpoint. From there, just go directly to the Director’s Office and follow the hallway to the Hotline Chamber.

Once you’re there, you’ll be able to hear the hotline ring, so go and see who’s calling.

According to the directive, there is a problem at the Foundation, which you visited earlier during the Finnish Tango mission.

To reach this area, return to the Checkpoint in Central Executive and fast travel to the Foundation, called Restricted Area on the main map.

Upon reaching the Restricted Area, interact with the tree engraving on the nearby pillar.

Collectibles to be found:

  • Research and records – Hiss Research – Variation in alterations
    • (On the boardroom desk)

Explore the Foundation and investigate the Nail in Control

Welcome to the Foundation – a brand new area in the Oldest House that you can explore.

Your journey begins by simply following the path forward, until you reach a door that you can open by using the throw to place the power core back into the socket. Doing so will open the door and luckily turn the lights back on.

Put the power core into the socket.

Continue following the path, and when crystals block your path, take the tunnel on the left, following the sign pointing to the Delta Research Site.

Levitate across the gaps and continue following the path, until you are attacked by several Hiss. After defeating these creatures, you can go to the northern alcove to open a chest and then continue along the western path.

You’ll quickly reach a new checkpoint, which you can clear after defeating the three Hiss enemies guarding it.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to levitate across the chasm in front of you and head into the next tunnel. Be prepared for a fight though, as in the next area you’ll find yourself fighting some new Hiss enemies, called Hiss Sharpened.

These Hiss enemies attack by throwing axes and have the ability to evade, which can make them quite deadly enemies. The best way to defeat them is to use a combination of levitation and shield, which will allow you to defend yourself, while keeping track of where each Hiss Sharpened is.

Once you have the enemy pinned down, take them out using your skills and service weapon.

Once you’ve dealt with Hiss Sharpened, it’s time to cross the bridge and venture deeper into the Foundation, which will lead you to the toxic geysers.

Beware of toxic geysers.

Like the mold that infests the Oldest House, these geysers will harm you if you come into contact with them. Fortunately, they seem to follow some sort of schedule, so you can run or levitate over them easily. Just keep an eye on the geysers while you do it: when they start shaking, they’re about to erupt.

Next, you’ll want to continue down the tunnel until you reach Cave Bleed and discover that the Astral Plane is breaking into the Foundation.

Fly through the breach, taking out Astral Plane enemies as you go, to reach the Foundation caves on the other side of the intrusion, where you can continue walking through tunnels until you reach Crossroads and The Nail.

However, before investigating the Nail, be sure to clear the Checkpoint in the middle of the Crossroads.

Complete the Astral Plane Challenge under control

It looks like we’re back on the Astral Plane, but this time there’s a twist: you have to choose which upgrade you’ll receive.

There are two options:

  • Shape: A new ability that Jesse can use that allows you to control the crystals you find in the Foundation, either to create platforms or attack enemies.
  • Fracture: A utility weapon upgrade that allows any form of weapon to fire through the crystals found in the Foundation.

Which upgrade you choose isn’t ultimately that important, because you’ll get the other ability later in The Foundation DLC and your decision here will simply alter the order of the quests you encounter.

Choose the upgrade you prefer and the Astral Plane Challenge will begin.

If you choose Shape, you will be tasked with learning how to create platforms and use the ability to attack your enemies. While, if you choose Fracture, you will learn how to use the service weapon to destroy the various crystal formations in the Foundation.

Learning Shape involves creating platforms, while Fracture is about destroying crystals.

Once you have completed the challenge, you will return to Crossroads and the Foundation mission will be completed.

For completing this mission, you will receive:

It’s time to travel to the mysterious Federal Control Office. Our Control walkthrough can help you through story missions, including Welcome to the Oldest House, Unknown Call, Principal’s Override, Old Boys’ Club, Threshold, My Brother’s Keeper, Face of the Enemy, Finnish Tango, Polaris and Take Control. You can also learn new supernatural powers by completing A Merry Chase, A Good Defense, and A Captive Audience. We also have guides on how to upgrade your service weapon, your skills, how to use weapons and personal mods, how to unlock each outfit, and the solution to the roulette wheel puzzle.

The next quest, The Nail, will begin automatically, but the order in which the tasks appear depends on the upgrade you selected in the Astral Plane.

If you choose Form, you will first be tasked with exploring the warehouse and the collapsed department.

However, if you selected the Fracture skill, you will first head to the Canyon Rim and the Gamma Research Site.

Good luck exploring the Foundation!
