Civilization 6 Religious Victory – how to win with Religion, gain Followers and convert cities

Civilization 6’s religious victory is a brand new victory condition in the Civ series, but thanks to a simple and clever implementation, it feels like it’s been here all along.

Religion works in much the same way as previous Civ games: cities and units can exert pressure to convert others nearby, and many beliefs are shared by everyone who follows that religion, rather than just the founding civilization. However, the condition of Religious Victory is, of course, completely new and, as such, we will explain below how to spread the holy word everywhere.

Before we do that, though, we’d also quickly remind you of our Scientific Victory and Military Domination Victory guides, because there’s no point in dominating Religion only to be overtaken by a space race or a surprise nuke you could have seen coming!

A quick note: We’ve updated the Civ 6 guides for the game’s release on Nintendo Switch, but keep in mind that they contain information about the Rise and Fall DLC as well as the base game, which means some things only apply if you have that DLC! Otherwise… keep going!

Religious victory conditions

To achieve a religious victory, your religion must be the “predominant” religion in all other civilizations in the game. A Religion is the predominant one for a civilization when it is followed by more than 50% of the cities of that civilization.

A city officially follows a religion if:

  • More than half of the citizens of a city are followers of a certain religion; and
  • That Religion has the majority of Followers in the city.

So for example, if my city of Washington has 7 citizens and 3 citizens follow Hinduism, 1 follows Judaism, and no others follow a religion, that city will not follow Hinduism yet. If the followers of Hinduism in that city increased to 4 of its 7 citizens, then officially Hinduism will follow; It needs to cross that threshold of 50% of citizens, in addition to being the religion with the most followers in that city, in order for the city to follow that Religion.

Religious victory strategies

As with all Civilization games, it will not be possible to create a complete step-by-step guide to religious victory, simply due to the ever-changing elements of Civilization each game. Instead, we’ve put together our best tips and advice for a religious game, covering several aspects of the game:

  • The Theology, Divine Right, Theocracy, and Kandy Combo: Arguably the most crucial point in your religious campaign is the moment you unlock Theocracy. As a civic, you’ll want to focus on culture, rather than science, and follow the path that also grants you theology and the wonder of the Mahabodhi Temple, before gaining access to Mont St. Michael from Divine Right, and then the theocracy . Add to this Suzerain’s successful partnership with the city-state of Kandy (which grants a 50% bonus to Relic Faith returns and combines brilliantly with Mont St. Michael’s additional Relic slots) and you should have a huge long-term advantage in the Religious field. game.
  • Historical Religions have no inherent bonuses – an obvious one for Civ veterans, but for beginners it’s worth noting that regardless of which religion you choose, you won’t see any difference in gameplay other than the symbol and name displayed . All of the religious effects in the game come from your choosing various beliefs as you progress.
  • Always choose the God King Policy: +1 Faith in the Capital may not seem like a big deal, but at the beginning of a game this can be crucial in getting you to your first Faith in the Pantheon, which is itself a crucial factor in speeding up. his religious growth later.
  • Best and Worst Pantheon Beliefs: Pantheons, like everything in Civ, depend on your situation. However, there are some standout options. The Rites of Passage will give you a fantastic start to your Religion if you make the extra effort to explore and eliminate as many Barbarians as possible. With 50 Faith each, you can quickly rush some Missionaries or other religious units early in the game. Lady of the Reeds and Marshes is a great option for boosting your cities’ production if she is placed correctly, while religious idols can add a lot if you are in a fortuitous position for mining. Fertility Rites is another strong driver, this time for the city’s growth, as it is a 10% bonus not to your food surplus, but to the actual growth rates themselves. Finally, we’re big fans of Divine Spark, thanks to Civ 6’s added Big Person focus. Advanced players will know to put a big emphasis on this, so any help you can get could win you the game.

Finally, Cultural Victory, Foreign Tourism and National Tourism are explained in depth here.

  • How to deal with religious rivals like Spain: Spain the pain, as no one calls it. The Spanish are tremendously aggressive with their religious layout in Civ 6, and if you can’t pick them yourself, they will automatically be your biggest rivals for religious victory. We found that there are two main ways to counter religious spread. First, you can reinforce your own religion, particularly by building Holy Places in various cities. Generating enough Faith to purchase new Missionaries is one of the only ways to recover a lost Holy City, so you’ll need multiple backup options. The second method, and the most effective, is war. Killing enemy Apostles and Missionaries will reduce that Religion’s influence by up to 250 in that area, and also means that with a simple cavalry unit you can patrol your borders, eliminating any pagans who try to enter. Recently, we fought a roughly 2,000-year war against the Spanish in our Science game, simply to prevent them from gaining an early religious victory. Everyone hated us, but it was worth it.
  • In a hurry to get to Stonehenge? – You can, but that won’t win you the game. In fact, the Civic Tree Oracle is better in the long run, thanks to the excellent reduction in the purchase cost of Great Persons. You’ll likely only get one in a multiplayer game, and in fact we suggest focusing on cultural, rather than scientific, growth early on, to speed up the Oracle and give you a more sustained advantage in the late game (where the Great Ones Characters can cost more than 5,000 Faith at a time to purchase). If you can sneak into Stonehenge, by all means, take that too!
  • Time your policy changes and new beliefs at the right time: Policy changes are free when you unlock a new Civic, but they can also be purchased for a relatively meager amount of gold. Sometimes, especially if you can’t wait for the next Civic, that cost can be worth it. For example, in a militaristic game we discovered that waiting for the opportunity to implement the Religion Wars Policy gave us a huge advantage when fighting civilizations that did not follow our religion. At the same time, waiting until we could add a new Empowering Belief, specifically Crusade, meant we got a huge +10 Combat Strength bonus for fighting near cities of the same Religion, which works fantastically with a massive Missionary conversion stored.
