Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Montenevera Gym, including how to beat Ghost Gym Leader Ryme and double battles

You have to fight Ryme, the leader of Montenevera’s ghost-type gym, during Victory Road in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

However, before fighting her in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, you must complete Montenevera’s gym test by winning three double battles in a row.

Below, we cover how to beat Dual Battle Trainers and how to beat Ghost Gym Leader Ryme, so you can add another Gym Badge to your collection.

How to get to Montenevera in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

If you haven’t unlocked any Pokémon Centers near the city yet, the easiest way to get to Montenevera in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is to take the path northeast of Medali, following the path that goes up the snowy mountain.

We recommend setting Pokémon Centers as map destinations on your path, which makes the correct path up the mountain appear clearer. Once you have arrived in Montenevera, you will find the gym on the main stairs on the east side of town.

How to beat double battle trainers in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for the Montenevera Gym test

The Montenevera Gym test tasks you with taking the stage and winning three double battles in a row. This means that you and your opponents will be using the first two Pokémon in your party to begin with, so choose wisely!

To help you during continuous battles, your Pokémon will heal between each battle and you’ll receive attacks, special attacks, and speed boosts from the cheering crowd.

The first is Trainer Tas, so here’s how to beat him during the double battle:

Pokemon Level Guy Weaknesses
Shuppet 40 Ghost dark and ghost
Greavard 40 Ghost dark and ghost

You will receive a cash prize of 5600 for defeating Tas and now you can move on to the next fight.

Next up is Coach Lani, and here’s how to beat her:

Pokemon Level Guy Weaknesses
Persecutor 40 Ghost dark and ghost
Misdreavus 40 Ghost dark and ghost

You will receive a cash prize of 5600 for defeating Lani and you will be able to advance to the final battle.

The last double battle is against MC Sledge himself, and here we explain how to beat him:

Pokemon Level Guy Weaknesses
Sableye 40 Dark ghost Fairy
Drifblim 40 Ghost / Fly Dark, Electric, Ghost, Ice and Rock

You’ll get another 5600 cash prize and you can now return to the gym staff to start your battle with Ryme, so make sure to heal all your Pokémon again.

Our The Teal Mask walkthrough will help you complete the first part of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, but make sure you know how to start it first. When visiting Kitakami it is a good idea to know how to get Sinistea, Dipplin and The Loyal Three. Our Pokémon Scarlet and Violet walkthrough can take you through the main campaign, including The First Day of School, Victory Road, Starfall Street, Path of Legends, and, when you’re ready, The Way Home and the final boss. Elsewhere, we can help with the normal gym test secret item menu, version differences, the best scarlet and violet starter, XP farming, shiny Pokémon, and learning to fly, swim, climb, and run. When it comes to individual Pokémon, we can help with Gimmighoul, Ditto, Bellibolt, Pawmot, Scovillain, Frigibax, Brambleghast, Annihilape, Farigiraf, Dudunsparce, Lycanrock, Armarouge, and Ceruledge.

How to Beat Ghost Gym Leader Ryme in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Ryme, the gym leader of Montenevera, loves Ghost-type Pokémon and her team reflects that.

Ghost-type Pokémon are weak to Dark and Ghost-type Pokémon.

Dark-type Pokémon will do better here, as they are not vulnerable to Ryme’s Ghost moves. If you chose Sprigatito as your starter, we recommend using it here, since it is a dual-type Grass and Dark. Kingambit, Lokix, and Maschiff (and the Mabosstif evolution) are also great against Ryme. If you don’t have any of these, be sure to bring at least two strong Pokémon with Dark or Ghost-type moves.

Having an evolved Sprigatito will help fight Ryme.

The battle against Ryme will be a little different than other Gym Leaders, as it continues with double Pokémon battles. So there will always be two of Ryme’s Pokémon on the stage until you reach the last one.

Ryme will continue to terastalize his latest Pokémon as usual, so even if it isn’t a Ghost-type at first, it will become one. So, you’ll have to fight this Terastalized Toxtricity at the same time as Houndstone.

Ryme’s full Pokémon team is:

Pokemon Level Guy Weaknesses
Mimikyu 41 Ghost/Fairy Bug, Dark, Electric, Grass and Ghost
banette 41 Ghost Electric and Grass
dog stone 41 Ghost Electric and Grass
Toxtricity 42 Electric / PoisonousTerra Type: Ghost Earth and Psychic TypeTerra: Dark and Ghost

A double battle with Ryme.

For defeating Ryme, you will receive 7,560 prize money, TM114 Shadow Ball, and a Gym Badge. Increasing the level cap so that Pokémon listen to you and are easier to catch will depend on where you are in the Victory Road story.

Also, depending on where you are in Victory Road, you may have a battle with Nemona after defeating Ryme.

Who will you face next on Victory Road? Will it be Katy, Brassius, Kofu, Iono, Larry, Tulip or Grusha? Or maybe you’re ready to fight the Elite Four and the ultimate champion! If you want to take a break from the gyms, you can always tackle the Path of Legends and Starfall Street stories.
