World Athletics Day 2023: World Athletics Day is organized by the IAAF (International Amateur Athletics Federation) on May 7 every year. It was first celebrated in the year 1996. More than 100 sports federations from around the world participated in the IAAF World Athletics Day 2016 to promote sport and exercise for good health.

The theme of World Athletics Day 2023 is “Athletics for all: a new beginning”.

About the IAAF

The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) was founded on July 17, 1912 in Stockholm (Sweden). The IAAF is the world governing body for the sport of track and field athletics.

Each event has a specific purpose, such as World Athletics Day.

Objectives of World Athletics Day;

1. Popularize sport among young people.

2. Promote Athletics as the main sport in schools and institutions.

3. Increase public awareness about sports and educate young people about the importance of sports.

4. Firmly establish an important link between youth, our sport and environmental conservation.

How is World Athletics Day celebrated?

The sport of athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive events such as walking, running, throwing and jumping, etc. The most common types of track and field competitions are track and field, road running, walking, and cross-country running.

Athletics in India;

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is the apex body for running and managing athletics in India and is affiliated to the IAAF and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The AFI has 32 state units and affiliated institutional units.

The AFI was formed in 1946 and the federation organizes the national championships and organizes training for Indian athletics.

So the basic purpose of World Athletics Day is to promote sports culture among students from their childhood so that they can achieve good results in big events like Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games etc.
