Will BCCI change the ICC World Cup 2023 schedule again amidst security concerns in Hyderabad?

Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) expresses concern about hosting back-to-back ODI World Cup matches due to organization and security issues. The HCA is appealing to the BCCI (Board of Control of Cricket in India) to make further changes to the schedule which has been changed nine times.

The statement comes eleven days after the BCCI revealed the modified schedule and four days before ticket sales officially begin.

The schedule announcement suffered delays in June, but adjustments were recently made by the BCCI and ICC. Nine matches were changed, including one of the most anticipated of the tournament, the clash between India and Pakistan. The India-Pakistan match was moved a day earlier to October 15 in Ahmedabad due to Navratra.

In Hyderabad, New Zealand will take on the Netherlands on October 9 and Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka on October 10.

With back-to-back World Cup matches, the security measures are being questioned by the Hyderabad police.

“While the changes are not confirmed, back-to-back matches are challenging. If the BCCI considers changes, it is positive. We are working with security agencies to explore options and keep the BCCI informed,” an unnamed HCA official said.

However, BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla said it is unlikely that any changes to the schedule will be made now. He emphasized that making significant changes is complex since it involves the decision of many actors.

“I oversee the World Cup venue in Hyderabad. Changing the schedule is not easy and involves the ICC, the teams and more. It’s unlikely.”

Of the 45 matches to be played in the World Cup tournament, Hyderabad will host three of them. Here is the schedule of matches that will take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal, in Hyderabad.

Security concerns are also being raised as Pakistan will play two of the matches to be held in Hyderabad. After more than seven years, Pakistan returns to India for two warm-up matches and two tournament matches in Hyderabad. The police are likely to deploy between 2,000 and 2,500 troops for each party.
