Kannada news channel Power TV has introduced its first AI-generated news anchor Soundarya. The AI anchor made her debut on the channel’s evening newscast on Tuesday, July 12, 2023.
The management gave her the name and, according to the Hindustan Times, the AI news anchor introduced herself by saying “Hello everyone. AI is making its mark in every industry and has also entered the television news industry. Some of my colleagues (AI news anchors) have started presenting news on some of the northern channels of India. I am Soundarya, the first robotic presenter of Power TV in South India.”
Soundarya might be the first AI news anchor in Karnataka, but she is not the first. Apart from Soundarya, a few other channels in India have launched their own AI-powered news anchors. Recently, OTV, an Odia news channel, launched Lisa, the state’s first AI news anchor.
In March, Aaj Tak also introduced Sana, the country’s first AI-generated news anchor. Sana is described as “brilliant, beautiful, ageless, tireless, speaks several languages and can always be controlled.”
The development of Soundarya is an important milestone in the evolution of AI-powered news presentations.
Soundarya’s arrival has generated mixed reactions. Some viewers have welcomed the use of AI in news presentations, while others have expressed concern about the potential impact on jobs.
