Who is Arjun Ram Meghwal, India’s new Law Minister after Kiren Rijiju?

In an explosive decision, the Modi government sacked Kiren Rijiju as Union Minister of Law and Justice and replaced him with Arjun Ram Meghwal. Rijiju had been heading the Law Ministry since 2021. The BJP stalwart had lately received criticism from both the opposition and his party for his comments on the judiciary.

Arjun Ram Meghwal Early Life

  • Arjun Ram Meghwal was born to Lakhu Ram Meghwal and Hira Devi on December 20, 1953 in the village of Kishmidesar in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
  • He is highly educated and holds LLB, Master of Arts and MBA degrees from Dungar College, Bikaner and the University of the Philippines.
  • Meghwal qualified for the RAS exams in 1982 and was elected as a member of Rajasthan Udyog Seva. He was appointed as deputy warden in Jila Udhyog Kendra and served as general manager of Jila Udhyog Kendra of Shriganganagar, Dhaulpur, Rajsamvad, Jhunjhnu, Jaipur and Alwar districts of Rajasthan.
  • He was appointed as Special Duty Officer to Mr. Hari Shankar Bhabra, Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 1994.
  • Meghwal was promoted as an IAS officer in the 1999 batch of Rajasthan cadre and headed various administrative posts: Under Secretary, Technical Education; Special Secretary of Higher Education; Managing Director, Rajasthan Laghu Udhyog Nigam Limited; Additional Commissioner; Commercial Tax Department; District Collector and District Magistrate, Churu.

Arjun Ram Meghwal’s political career

  • Arjun Ram Meghwal found his calling in politics and voluntarily retired from public administration.
  • His political career took off in 2009 when he was elected Member of Parliament from the Bikaner constituency in Rajasthan, representing the Bhartiya Janata Party.
  • He was re-elected from Bikaner constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
  • He briefly served as Minister of State, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs in the Ministry of State.
  • In 2019, Meghwal was inducted into Narendra Modi’s cabinet as MoS Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and MoS Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
  • With effect from May 18, 2023, he assumed charge as Union Minister of Law and Justice, replacing Kiren Rijiju.
  • Arjun Ram Meghwal is also an educator, farmer and social worker, as well as a politician.
