When is Anti-Terrorism Day 2023 celebrated in India?
Anti-Terrorism Day is celebrated on May 21 every year with the objective of promoting national harmony, mitigating terrorism and unity among people of all castes, creeds, etc.
The day also raises awareness about violence perpetrated by terrorists and provides knowledge to young people about terrorism and its impact on human lives and suffering. Also, raise awareness about an anti-social act of terrorism.

Why is Anti-Terrorism Day 2023 celebrated in India?
On May 21, 1991, the official announcement was made following the assassination of the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. He was killed in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, during a terrorist operation by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
After the assassination, Vice President Singh’s government decided to observe May 21 as Anti-Terrorism Day. On this day a commitment is made in all government offices, public companies and other public institutions.
What is the importance of Anti-Terrorism Day 2023 in India?
Terrorism poses a serious threat to democracy, the rule of law and the exercise of fundamental rights. Therefore, National Anti-Terrorism Day is an important day in India because it urges people to be alert and careful in their daily lives. Spread the message of peace and encourage people to put aside their differences and coexist peacefully. It helps us understand the importance of maintaining social peace.
How will Anti-Terrorism Day 2023 be celebrated in India?
This year, the day falls on Sunday, which is a closed holiday for Central Government offices. Therefore, there are no official announcements for the day’s celebration.
In the year 2022, it was a Saturday. And to avoid inconvenience to employees who travel long distances to come to office on Saturday, it was decided that the ‘pledge taking ceremony’ at the Central Government offices would be held on Friday (May 20, 2022).
However, if Saturday is not a holiday for the state or UT government, the ‘pledge taking ceremony’ will be held on May 21, 2022. It will preferably be held in the morning.
It is also indicated that, to protect the safety of participants and organizers and avoid public gatherings, officials may be advised to take the oath solemnly in their rooms or offices. A copy of the ‘undertaking’ in both English and Hindi is attached (Annex).
Furthermore, considering the importance of the occasion, various ways will be followed to propagate the anti-terrorism message, including digital and social media platforms.
