The decision to rename Mughal Gardens after Amrit Udyan is already raising eyebrows and is likely to stir up another storm for the BJP-led central government. However, party leaders welcomed the president’s decision, calling it a necessary measure to break the colonial chains of the past and stop glorifying “invaders.”

The Rashtrapati Bhavan gardens will open early this year. Smt Draupadi Murmu will inaugurate the opening of Amrit Udyan and kick off the Udyan Utsav on January 29, 2023. The public will be able to visit the gardens from Tuesday, January 31.

President Draupadi Murmu announced on January 28 that the Mughal Gardens would be called: Amrit Udyan. The decision is part of the broader “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” festivities, commemorating 75 years of India’s independence.
“On the occasion of the celebrations of 75 years of Independence as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the President of India has given a common name to the gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan as ‘Amrit Udyan’,” a statement read by Navika Gupta, deputy press secretary to the president.
