What is the Legion of Honor?
The Legion of Honor, or the National Order of the Legion of Honor, is the highest French decoration, both at the military and civilian levels. It is one of the highest national honors in the world. It was Napoleon Bonaparte who established the Order in 1802. The Honor has been presented for more than 200 years in the name of the French Head of State. Honneur et Patrie, honor and homeland in French, is the motto of the Order. According to the official website of the Legion of Honor, 300 foreigners and 2,200 French people are decorated each year. Currently, the Order has 79,000 members. Normally, the honor recognizes the contribution of the French people to the “service of the nation.” In the case of foreigners, the honor is conferred for their support of the nation. Sometimes the award is also awarded to high dignitaries on a state visit to the country.
What does the prize carry?
The prize does not imply any financial or material benefit for the prize. The government identifies that the Legion of Honor cannot be applied to potential honorees. The award insignia is a five-armed Maltese asterisk. In reality, this asterisk is hung from an oak and laurel wreath.
