Uncoordinated excavation on roads has not only always caused problems to pedestrians and commuters but has also caused a loss of around Rs. 3,000 crores every year. To combat these drawbacks and more, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the “Call Before u Dig” (CBuD) app. The objective of the launch of the application is to facilitate coordination between underground utility owners and excavation agencies to prevent damage to utilities caused by uncoordinated excavations.

The need for the application

As an initiative of the Ministry of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Communications aims to prevent damage to underlying assets such as fiber optic cables caused by uncoordinated excavations, with this application. These damages cause losses of up to Rs 3,000 million every year.

The goal will help reduce citizen discomfort and, at the same time, avoid potential business losses. Through this application, interruptions caused to citizens in essential services such as telecommunications, water, electricity, gas and roads will be reduced.

The application

First, the Call Before u Dig app will connect excavators with asset owners. This will be done through SMS/email notifications and click to call. This will ensure that there are planned excavations and excavations in India, while ensuring that underground assets are safe.

The app aims to provide excavation companies with a point of contact. Through one point of contact, excavation companies can easily inquire about current subsurface utilities before starting excavation activity. For utility owners, the app will help to know about the impending jobs at the site.
