A total of 19 opposition parties refused to attend the inauguration ceremony. The joint statement by the opposition parties reads: “The inauguration of a new Parliament building is a momentous occasion. Despite our belief that the government is threatening democracy and our disapproval of the autocratic way in which the new Parliament was built, we were open to settling our differences and celebrating this occasion. However, Prime Minister Modi’s decision to inaugurate the new Parliament building alone, completely ignoring President Murmu, is not only a grave insult but a direct assault on our democracy that demands a befitting response.”

The Central Vista Redevelopment Project, which is being undertaken to modernize Central Vista, includes the New Parliament House. The proposal for a new parliament building was inspired by concerns about the stability of the existing parliament building, which is around 100 years old.
The constructed area of the new Parliament building is approximately 65,000 square meters. The best possible use of space is guaranteed by its triangular design. It is situated near Raisana Hills in New Delhi and serves as the main administrative center of the government of India. There will be space in the new Parliament building for 384 Rajya Sabha members and 888 Lok Sabha members. According to a government document, it would showcase a variety of architectural elements from important Indian heritage structures, including the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
