What Is Facial Recognition Technology? How Does It Work? And the List Of Airports

The Government of India has taken a major initiative by introducing paperless entry system ‘DigiYatra’ at select airports to make air travel hassle-free this Thursday.

These selected airports will use facial recognition software, meaning passengers will not need to carry their ID card or boarding pass while traveling.

In the month of August 2022, GMR-led Delhi International Airport (DIAL) announced the soft launch of the Centre’s DigiYatra initiative and launched the beta version of its app for Android platforms.

The first phase of the initiative will include seven airports.

Starting with three:

  • Delhi
  • Bengaluru
  • Varanasi

Delhi airport has the necessary infrastructure installed at Terminal 3 of the airport, while the other airports are also installing the necessary infrastructure for the same.

The next four airports would have the technology launched in March 2023.

  • hyderabad,
  • Calcutta,
  • Pune and
  • Vijayawada

The technology will eventually be rolled out across the country.

DigiYatra: What is it and how will it work?

  • DigiYatra or facial recognition technology allows passengers to pass through checkpoints at the airport and all this is paperless and contactless.
  • Facial features will be used to establish your identity linked to the boarding pass.
  • Checkpoints where facial feature technology would be installed include airport entrance, security check areas, aircraft boarding, etc.

Airlines offer facial recognition technology:

The facility will be available for passengers taking domestic flights on:

  • air india,
  • look and
  • Indigo

SpiceJet, GoFirst and Akasa Air are not yet offering DigiYatra facilities.

DigiYatra: How can you avail the facilities?

  • You can avail this service by registering your details on the DigiYatra app using Aadhaar-based validation and self-image capture.
  • The next step includes scanning the boarding pass. That way, the credentials are shared with the airport authorities.
  • The passenger must first scan the barcode boarding pass and the facial recognition system installed on the electronic gate. This will validate the passenger’s identity and travel document.
  • Once this process is completed, the passenger can enter the airport through the electronic gate.
  • The passenger must follow the normal procedure to pass security control and board the plane.

How is DigiYatra being implemented?

The project is being implemented by the DigiYatra Foundation company whose shareholders are:

  • Airports Authority of India (26% share)
  • bangalore airport,
  • delhi airport,
  • hyderabad airport,
  • Mumbai Airport and
  • Cochin International Airport.

Facial recognition technology or DigiYatra is a valuable addition as it makes flying more comfortable and reduces congestion at airports.

It is currently located in several airports around the world, including Dubai, Singapore, Atlanta and Narita (Japan).

It has helped bring efficiency to the identity detection system of airports around the world.
