On May 29, a Foucault pendulum was inaugurated in the new Parliament building. The pendulum is designed in such a way that it is suspended from the ceiling of the central lobby of the brand new Parliament building of India. The pendulum rotates on its axis. At the top of the Constitution Hall there is a skylight from which the pendulum hangs.

Description of Foucault’s pendulum
The Foucault Pendulum is designed by the National Science Council Museum (NCSM) in Kolkata. The pendulum weighs 36 kg and is 22 meters long, making it the largest piece of its kind in India.
A circular installation will be found on the ground. The purpose of the installation is to allow the movement of the pendulum. The circular installation also comes with a grill around it. The grill allows visitors to observe the pendulum. At the height of Parliament, the pendulum needs a time of 49 hours, 59 minutes and 18 seconds to complete a full rotation, according to the details mentioned in the installation.
What really is Foucault’s pendulum?
The original Foucault pendulum, named after Leon Foucault, a 19th century French scientist, is a simple experiment to show the rotation of the planet. It was in 1851 when Foucault carried out the experiment. This was the first clear evidence that the planet rotates on its axis.
The experiment shows a heavy object hanging from a height with a rope, which can swing in any direction.
What do the people behind the construction of the Pendulum have to say?
NSCM Director General Arijit Dutta Chaudhury said that it is actually a proud moment for the members of the National Science Council Museum (NCSM) that they can contribute in a small way to the development of the new parliament building.
Arijit Dutta Chaudhury further stated that Foucault’s Pendulum is actually not something new. The first pendulum was installed at the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, in the year 1991. The man claimed that when they installed the pendulum there for the first time, they saw some problems with the accessories that had to be fixed. The one installed in the new parliament building has a completely new design.
