Weather in Fortnite: Tornadoes and Lightning explained

Weather, in the form of tornadoes and lightning, was released during Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1.

Originally shown in the opening trailer for Fortnite Chapter 3, the different types of weather help give the island a sense of life in a similar way to the introduction of wildlife during Chapter 2.

Whether it’s a tornado or lightning, each form of weather can give you a small benefit. Although it may have a cost.

Weather in Fortnite explained

Weather, whether it’s a tornado or lightning, will form in Fortnite about two minutes into the game when the storm we all know and love begins to descend on the island.

Where the weather appears and which type is selected randomly, but fortunately both are visible from afar. This allows you to avoid or travel to said climate in an attempt to benefit from its different effects.

Lightning comes from gray storm clouds, while tornadoes are much larger and look like, well, tornadoes.

Both can travel around the island, so if you’re not keeping an eye on the sky, you could find yourself in the middle of a storm!

Tornadoes in Fortnite explained

Tornadoes in Fortnite pick up debris, from cars to fallen trees and anything else that might cross their wake, as they travel across the island. This includes you!

However, don’t worry if you find yourself within range of a tornado; You’ll simply get a free ride, undamaged, as you slide around the cyclone. You can even choose the eye of the storm, but unfortunately there isn’t much to see.

When you’re ready to go, safely move out of its path until you reach the ground.

Lightning in Fortnite explained

Lightning in Fortnite controls the island and sometimes gray storms.

Lightning strikes at regular intervals when you’re near or below a storm, and, Breath of the Wild style, sparks will appear on the section of ground where you’ll land. If you want, head to one of these sparkling areas, but if not, run!

To increase your chances of being struck by lightning, go underwater or climb to higher ground once you are near a storm.

If you are struck by lightning, you will take 10 damage to your health or shield if you have any, as well as gain a speed boost.
