Ugadi 2023, the Hindu festival, will be commemorated this year on March 22. Also known as Yugadi, the day marks the Andhra Pradesh New Year’s Day, which begins on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra.

Marathi and Konkani Hindus also celebrate the day as Gudi Padwa. It is known as the traditional new year for the Hindus of Maharashtra and Goa.

  • According to the ancient legend about the origin of the Ugadi festival, the creation of the universe was started on this day by Lord Brahma.
  • Additionally, on this day, he created months, weeks, and days to track the passage of time.
  • Legend has it that Ugadi marks the first day of the creation of the universe.
  • Lord Vishnu is known as Yugaadikrit, which means the creator of ages or ‘Yugas’. On this day the Lord is worshiped. It is a belief that Lord Vishnu will bless the devotees of him with a happy and prosperous life.

Ugadi 2023: Celebrations and Traditions

Celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm by the people of the southern states of India on this day.

  • clean their houses,
  • decorate your houses with Rangolis
  • wear new clothes.
  • Prepare special dishes called “Ugadi Pachadi”, which are made with six ingredients that represent the six different tastes of life: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. They are made with six ingredients, including tamarind, neem flowers, jaggery, mango, salt and green chili.
  • Perform special prayers and pujas.
  • People also prepare other traditional dishes such as pulihora (tamarind rice), bobbatlu (stuffed sweet bread) and obbattu (sweet bread).
