Cities in India have been trying to reduce their PM2.5 levels, although the ten that have not succeeded are present here in the list of the most polluted cities in India (2023).
While Delhi tops the list of most polluted cities, Faridabad comes second with an annual PM2.5 concentration of 95.6 µg/m3. Ghaziabad comes third with a reading of 91.25 µg/m3.

What is NCAP?
The NCAP began on January 10, 2019. It states that 131 cities that do not meet the national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for the period 2011-15 have to reduce their pollution levels with respect to the baseline of 2017 between 25 and 30 percent more. %. In September 2022, the Center set a target of reducing pollution by 40% with a deadline of 2026.
Delhi appears to be lagging behind the deadline, recording only a 7% reduction in its PM2.5 level.
This was demonstrated when the data was compared to 2019 levels; The analysis was based on data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The national annual safety limit for PM2.5 is 40 µg/m3.

Analysis of the situation.
Climate Trends Director Aarti Khosla said
“The nine major cities are also located in the Indo-Gangetic plains, which is a problematic region as a whole. Coastal cities like Mumbai are equally affected by air pollution, the analysis reveals. While the CPCB has already issued stricter reduction targets for cities that do not meet them, we are just a year away from 2024, the original NCAP target, and many cities, including Delhi, are still far from achieving their reduction targets ”.
Another analysis was carried out by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) in which data showed that Delhi was among the list of 48 out of 131 cities that had not met the targets set by the Centre.
Sunil Dahiya, analyst at CREA said:
“This shows that Delhi is far behind its year-on-year targets and is consequently unlikely to meet the long-term target of 2026. We have analyzed the data for the financial year as the Center has now linked performance of the financial year with the release of funds.”
