Time Traveler, also known as Holographic Time Traveler, is an interactive cinematic arcade game produced in partnership with Virtual Image Productions, Sega, and GTE Interactive Media. It was launched in 1991 under Sega.

Set in the Old West, The Time Traveler follows the journey of Marshal Gramm as he travels through different timelines on his quest to rescue Princess Kira and confront the evil Time Lord Va’kor. What made the game unique was its unique arcade cabinet, which utilized a giant black spherical mirror and a CRT television to project the game’s characters.

While The Time Traveler faced commercial shortcomings during its release, it has since earned a revered status as a cult classic. Its acclaim stems from its groundbreaking technical implementation and unique gameplay.

In Time Traveller, players are immersed in captivating graphics, surrounded by realistic sound design, and played by a captivating soundtrack that enhances the overall gaming experience. Stunning visuals, intricate puzzles, and an engaging narrative combine to create an unforgettable adventure that ensures players are immersed from start to finish.

Time Traveler occupies a unique and innovative place in gaming history and is of great significance to its technological advancement. However, we have to admit that finding and experiencing the game today can be a challenge.

The gameplay of Time Traveler is very similar to other laserdisc games, taking inspiration from games like Dragon’s Lair. Player interactions include steering the joystick in specific directions or pressing buttons at key moments throughout the game. Executing the right commands triggers movie clips depicting a character’s progression, while a wrong move results in a unique death scene tailored for each clip. The game provides players with a short tutorial and provides gameplay tips.

Player controls include a four-way joystick, an action button, and a time-reversal button, the latter a unique feature that allows players to rewind and replay the first few seconds after a failed sequence. This ingenious mechanism provides a second chance to escape impending death without restarting the entire full motion video (FMV) sequence. During breaks between levels, players can replenish the inventory of time-reversal cubes by inserting additional coins into the arcade.

The game starts with three lives and a single time-reversal cube, offering the potential for around ten minutes of perfect gameplay. Occasionally, game sequences will intentionally introduce delays, accompanied by a “time glitch” display. Time Traveler consists of seven different levels, each designated as a “time period.” Each level has randomized FMV sequences, incorporating themed eras such as prehistory, medieval, future, and magical times.

As players progress through the game, they will occasionally encounter a slot mini-game called “Hell’s Gate.” Here, players can stake their lives to compete for extra lives, earn free points, or risk losing the entire game.
