Robert Wadlow, an American national born in 1918 in Alton, Illinois, holds the record for being the tallest person in history, standing at a height of 8 ft 11 in / 2.72 meters. Due to his extraordinary height, he was referred to as the “Alton Giant” and the “Giant of Illinois” and gained nationwide fame in the United States. However, Wadlow’s height also caused him mobility issues, and he required braces to walk, which caused him discomfort in his feet and legs. Unfortunately, Wadlow’s life was cut short at the age of 22, following an ankle infection that resulted from a faulty brace he wore after attending a public event in Manistee, Michigan.

John Rogan

John Rogan, born on February 16, 1868, in Hendersonville, Tennessee, USA, was once considered the tallest human to have ever lived, measuring 8 ft 9 in / 2.67 metres until he was surpassed by Robert Wadlow in the 1930s. However, Rogan still holds the record for being the tallest person of African descent to have ever lived.

Rogan’s father was a freed slave from Northern Tennessee, and his physical development was normal until he turned 13. Shortly after his 13th birthday, his body started growing abnormally fast, leading to ankylosis, a condition that made it impossible for him to stand or walk at the age of 14. Despite his physical limitations, Rogan refused to be exploited for his size and declined job offers from carnivals and freak shows. Instead, he worked as a painter.

Unfortunately, Rogan’s life was cut short at the age of 37 due to complications related to his ankylosis. However, his legacy lives on as a symbol of perseverance and strength in the face of physical challenges.

John Carroll

John Carroll, also known as the “Buffalo Giant,” was an American and the third tallest person in history. Born in 1932 in Buffalo, New York, he reached a height of 8 ft 8 in / 2.64 meters as a fully grown adult. Unfortunately, Carroll suffered from two conditions that affected his physical health. Acromegaly, which causes abnormal enlargement of the hands and feet, and Kyphoscoliosis, which causes abnormal curvature of the spine, worsened with his rapid growth after turning 16.

Despite these challenges, Carroll tried to live a normal life and even attempted to run for public office, although he was unsuccessful. Tragically, in late 1969, Carroll passed away at a hospital near his hometown of Buffalo, New York, at the age of 37. Despite his untimely death, he remains a reminder of the resilience and determination of individuals facing physical obstacles.

Leonid Stadnyk

Leonid Stadnyk, a Ukrainian man, was the fourth tallest person in recorded history and the tallest non-American to have ever lived. He was born on August 5, 1970, in a small village near Zhytomyr, northern Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union. Stadnyk reached a height of 8 ft 5 in / 2.57 metres due to his rapid growth, which began after he underwent a brain surgery at the age of 13. The surgery was necessary to remove a tumour that was releasing abnormal amounts of growth hormones into his body.

Although the surgery was successful in removing the tumour, Stadnyk continued to grow at an unusual pace. Despite his remarkable height, Stadnyk kept a low profile and avoided the public eye as much as possible. Tragically, on August 24, 2014, Stadnyk passed away due to a sudden brain haemorrhage at the age of 44. His legacy as one of the tallest people in history lives on.

Trijntje Keever

Trijntje Keever holds the title for being the tallest woman in history, and also the fifth tallest person overall. Born in April 1616 in the town of Edam, in Northwestern Netherlands, Keever reached a height of 8 ft 4 in / 2.54 metres by the time of her death. Keever gained widespread attention at a young age due to her rapid growth, and her parents exhibited her at carnivals where she was known as “De Groote Meid” (“The Big Girl”) in the Netherlands and throughout Europe.

Even foreign dignitaries such as Frederick the V, King of Bohemia, came to see Keever. Unfortunately, her fame was cut short due to cancer, and Keever passed away on July 2, 1633, at the young age of 17.

Vaino Myllyrinne

Väinö Myllyrinne was a Finnish man who was known for his extraordinary height, which made him one of the tallest people in recorded history. He was born on February 27, 1909, in Helsinki, Finland. Myllyrinne reached his adult height of 8 ft 2.25 in / 2.49 metres by the age of 21, making him the tallest person in Finland.
