Starfield Tips and Tricks

Here are some Starfield tips and tricks to help you on your interstellar journey:

  • Plan your skill selections. We recommend taking a good look at the five skill trees in Starfield, so you can determine what type of build you’d like to have. This will help you later, as you will have to decide which skills to invest the most points in and which ones to unlock. Remember that Backgrounds automatically give you three Skills, but you cannot change your Background after selecting it.
  • Traits can be removed. If you decide you don’t like a trait, then there is a way to remove it. Some Traits can be removed at Reliant Medical offices, but others may require a different method… Please note that once a Trait is removed, you cannot recover it.
  • Don’t let your guard down after a gravitational jump! Space is vast and you’ll never really know what’s out there, meaning you may find yourself in the middle of a battle after fast traveling between star systems or planets. While you can run away, helping the friendly ship can earn you a reward.
  • You cannot land a ship during combat. It’s not safe to land a ship while it’s being shot at, but if you find yourself in a battle you don’t want to fight, you can always perform a grav jump to another part of space.
  • Unlocks the Targeting Control Systems skill. This ability can be incredibly useful during spaceship combat because, after locking onto an enemy ship, it will allow you to directly target one of their systems, from lasers to shields. Therefore, it not only improves your aim, but can also help you board and seize enemy ships by targeting their defenses.

  • Keep an eye out for green first aid kits. If the light on a first aid kit is on, then it contains at least one item that will give you health or help cure an ailment. However, if the light is off, then the box is already empty.
  • Recover your health by sleeping. If you don’t want to use a Med Pack or eat something to restore your health, you can always take a short nap. Just remember to always include a berth in your boat design and you can have a restful night’s sleep whenever you want. It can even help solve an affliction…
  • Beware of afflictions! This is Starfield’s version of status effects and there are two types you need to pay attention to: injuries and infections. Injuries can result from combat or falls from great heights, while infections come from both biological and creature hazards. Some Afflictions will heal on their own, while others will require a specific health item or a visit to the doctor.
  • Always hide your contraband. You may find yourself picking up contraband (items prohibited in Settled Systems) on your travels. If you are caught carrying these items on your boat or in person, you will be arrested. To successfully hide contraband on your ship, you need to have some armored cargo space and, ideally, a Scan Jammer. While these items are rarely for sale, you can find them on enemy ships…
  • Avoid being arrested! If you are caught committing a crime, such as hacking or murder, on a Settled Systems planet, you may be arrested. Ending up in prison will cause you to lose some valuable XP, but you won’t drop a level or lose any skills.

  • As long as you are in the same star system, you can fast travel between planets. It is possible to quickly fast travel between any planets in the same star system, which is perfect for collecting resources. Although you might want to check a planet’s atmosphere before making the move…
  • Always scan a new planet before landing. While scanning a planet before landing on it for the first time won’t tell you everything you need to know about it, you may learn some important information. This can be anything from a resource you can find in it to whether the atmosphere is breathable.
  • Have the scanner open when exploring a new planet. This will allow you to keep track of how many resources, fauna or flora can be found on the planet, along with any traits it may have. Completely completing the survey percentage for a planet will reward you with its survey data, which can be sold, XP, and an advanced production bonus for that world.
  • Use the scanner to travel fast. Not only does the scanner help you gather information about the planets, but you can also use it to quickly travel back to your ship. Simply look for the Boat icon and once selected, you will be shown the Fast Travel icon. You can also use the scanner to quickly travel around certain locations like New Alantis.
  • Take the time to fully explore any settlement you visit. In addition to the new characters, landmarks, and vendors you can visit, wandering around a settlement can lead you to new quests or activities by listening to conversations and announcements.

  • Assign weapons and health items as favorites. Marking an item as a favorite will allow you to add it to the Quickslot menu where, as the name suggests, you can quickly access it whenever you want. This is perfect for when you want to switch weapons during combat. Be sure to regularly update your Quickslot selections as you acquire more powerful weapons.
  • Don’t forget your cargo hold. From weapons to potted plants, you’ll pick up a lot of items in Starfield, and before you know it, you’ll be exceeding your mass. When this happens, you will consume more oxygen supply when running. Fortunately, all your ships have their own cargo holds where you can store items you don’t want to take with you. You can also purchase larger cargo holds, so your ship can carry even more items.
  • Talk to your colleagues when they ask you to chat. From time to time one of your colleagues will want to talk to you. This may be because they want to give you an item they found or it will unlock a new conversation that will allow you to get closer to them. Who knows, maybe you’ll find romance in the stars.
  • Remember to assign crew members and companions to your ship or outpost. Don’t let your companions or crew members sit idly by; instead, put them to work on a ship or outpost. This way you can benefit from their own skills, which is very useful if they have skills that you haven’t invested points in yet.

  • Don’t want to see your spacesuit on breathable planets? There is an option for that. If you’re playing in third-person mode, chances are you don’t want your character running around in their spacesuit all the time. After all, you brought that cowboy hat; I might as well see them using it. To do so, head to your inventory of spacesuits and helmets, where you will find the option to hide these equipment on planets with a breathable atmosphere. Don’t worry, the team will respawn when needed!
  • The red dots on the star map are star systems that you cannot currently visit. Whether because you need to upgrade your ship’s fuel capacity or due to an unexplored route, these red star systems are currently out of reach. If the route is unexplored, you will first have to jump to another star system on this route to reach it. Don’t worry: you simply have to visit the system once and then you can continue.
  • Remember to use your flashlight. While space is exciting, you will also find yourself delving into caves or abandoned buildings during your adventure. When this happens, remember to turn on your flashlight, otherwise you will get lost in the dark.

Good luck traveling among the stars!
