Spider-Man Research Tokens, Research Stations and catching Pigeons explained

Research Tokens, earned by completing Research Stations, are one of several key resources in Spider-Man.

They unlock a little later than the other basic resources in the game and require slightly different skill sets to complete, and they are also the only resource you can obtain with not one or two, but three methods: completing research stations, doing Projects of circuits and pigeon hunting. So here on this page we will explain how to do each of them.

What are research tokens in Spider-Man and what are they for?

Research Tokens are one of Spider-Man’s six resources.

These will mostly become available as you progress through the story and level up, but for some, particularly the suits, you will need to complete specific tasks. More about them in our guide on how to unlock all the suits in Spider-Man.

Research tokens are obtained in three ways: completing research station tasks, completing circuit projects, and catching pigeons.

Research stations are pretty simple: they’re marked on the map with a purple magniscope icon, and when you interact with them, they give you a short task like swinging through smog clouds to collect pollution data. Doing so will reward you with research tokens to spend.

Circuit projects, similarly, are fairly easy to make. These are located in Octavius Labs, on a tablet on the desk right in front of you as you enter. These are puzzles based on circuits that you will have already encountered several times and that require you to carry current from one end of the board to the next with the correct charge level.

Meanwhile, pigeons are actually only unlocked as things to do in the game world when you head into a specific side quest, “Helping Howard.” It is unlocked fairly early in the main story; Continue progressing and checking after each mission until you see the Sidequest icon on your map.

Head to Howard at the Sidequest icon for his quest, and after a brief chat, he’ll explain that he’s lost many of his pet pigeons, thanks to being cruelly evicted from his home.

Pigeons are then marked on your map with a Pigeon icon, and when you get close, a large area will appear on your minimap to show you where to look for one. Eventually one will appear, and you’ll need to chase it through the air as fast as you can and catch it (by pressing L1 and R1 when prompted) to earn a research token and return it safely to Howard.

What are research tokens used for?

You can use research tokens to purchase new suits you’ve unlocked and purchase upgrades for Spidey in the form of suit modifications, gadgets, and gadget upgrades.

These will mostly become available as you progress through the story and level up, but for some, particularly the suits, you will need to complete specific tasks. More about them in our guide on how to unlock all the suits in Spider-Man.

How to quickly earn research tokens, complete research stations and catch pigeons

Unfortunately, it’s not easy to earn research tokens quickly, but some methods are faster than others.

One of the Circuit Project solutions.

You can earn six research tokens by completing all the circuit projects in the lab (two from specific projects and four from completing them all), and it’s fairly easy to complete them if you can keep up the pace.

Otherwise, Research Stations take about five minutes to complete and award two Research Tokens, which is a decent return for your time.

As for the pigeon hunt, we recommend that you unlock it as soon as the Helping Howard side quest appears on the map, fairly early in your progression through the story, so keep checking back between quests! – and then just quickly grab a pigeon if you pass one on your travels. Otherwise, it will take a little time to struggle to get just one research token.
