There are many weapons in Sons of the Forest, including pistols and various melee and ranged weapons used to kill enemies and hunt animals.

Most of these weapons are found in certain areas, but you must also create some. To find all the weapons in Sons of the Forest you will need specific items, such as the shovel and several access cards.

Not all weapons are as useful as others, so we’ve listed the best weapons below, along with all weapon locations and each crafted weapon recipe. You can also jump to a specific weapon location if you want more details on how to obtain it, or visit our dedicated ax locations page.

Best Sons of the Forest Weapons Explained

There are currently 16 weapons to find in Sons of the Forest:

There are also three craftable weapons:

handmade bow
handmade club
Crafted spear

You can also collect explosives like timed bombs and make Molotov cocktails, but we haven’t listed them above. However, it is worth knowing that they are most effective when dealing with crowds of enemies.

Of the 19 weapons listed above, we consider the Compound Bow, Crafted Spear, Katana, and Shotgun to be the best weapons in Sons of the Forest, and here’s why:

Since the compound bow can accept different types of arrows, some of which can be printed, and can shoot almost anything if you shoot at the head, we consider it one of the best weapons in Sons of the Forest.

It’s best when facing medium- and long-range enemies, so use a hotkey on a strong melee weapon to switch if an enemy gets too close.

Crafted spear

The Crafted Spear is one of the easiest weapons to obtain, as you only need some sticks, duct tape, and a knife to craft it. It may not be the most powerful weapon available, but it holds its own in combat and can be used at close or long range, making it excellent against many different types of enemies.

You can also use the spear to hunt animals if you need a gathering or a hiding place for the hide armor.

Katana

Although it is bad at blocking, we believe that the Katana is the best melee weapon in Sons of the forest because of how powerful and fast it is. It’s perfect for severing limbs (whether the person is dead or alive), and its power is further increased by increasing your Strength stat.

With enough strength, you can even take on armored enemies with ease.

Shotgun

The shotgun could very well be the best weapon in Sons of the Forest overall, but you have to be careful with how much ammo you have.

It is incredibly powerful at close and medium range, making it perfect for stressful combat scenarios. Just be sure to save your ammo for when you really need it, as there are other weapons, such as the pistol or crafted spear, that can be used in place of the shotgun in easier fights.

As of this writing, if you give Virginia a gun, she actually has unlimited ammo, so you might want to consider giving her the shotgun.

Here’s how to make the Crafted Bow, Mace, and Spear in Sons of the Forest:

Once you have the necessary materials, open your inventory with ‘I’, then combine them to make the weapon you want.

We have more specific details below, but at a glance, here’s where to find all the weapons in Sons of the Forest:

Sons of the Forest Composite Bow Location

The compound bow is located in a bunker marked with a green circle on your GPS locator in the southwest area of the map, meaning you need the shovel to dig out the muddy area to access the bunker.

Once you are in the bunker, go through the first door on your right. The compound bow is found next to a corpse in the bathroom, beyond the 3D printer and the bed.

Be sure to pick up the silencer on the same desk as the 3D printer while you’re here.

Children of the Forest Crossbow Location

You’ll first need to get the maintenance card to get the crossbow, which requires you to use the shovel.

Once you have the maintenance card, head to a cave on the northwest side of the island, marked with a green circle on your GPS locator. It’s just north of the big lake near the beach. You’ll know it’s the right area when you see two golf carts with vines.

You will have to go down the hatch inside the cave and then use your maintenance card on the blue card reader next to the shelves.

The Crossbow is near a corpse between the shelves of the plant, before the flooded section.

Sons of the Forest Electric Chainsaw Location

You’ll find the electric chainsaw in the same area where you buy the guitar, but you’ll need the maintenance card to open the way to both weapons.

The electric chainsaw is located in a bunker marked with a green circle on your GPS locator in the western part of the island, near the beach, just northwest of the lake into which five rivers flow.

Use your maintenance card to enter a gym, then take the first left, go through the spa area and up one of the stairs to the dining room.

Use your maintenance card on the door to the right of the water, before entering the nightclub, then take the first left in this room to find a small movie theater with beanbags.

The electric chainsaw is lodged in the corpse sitting on a beanbag at the front of the theater.

Sons of the Forest Guitar Location

The guitar is in the same area as the electric chainsaw, but you will need the maintenance card to open the way to both weapons.

La Guitarra is located in a bunker marked with a green circle on your GPS locator in the western part of the island, near the beach, just northwest of the lake into which five rivers flow.

Use your maintenance card to enter a gym, then take the first left, go through the spa area and up one of the stairs to the dining room.

Continue past the water and you will find a nightclub. The guitar is located on the bar, to the left of the dance floor.

Sons of the Forest Katana Location

The Katana is located on the second floor of a bunker on the southeast side of the map.

You need the maintenance card to go through a closed door near the entrance, then go down the stairs and through the door on the left to trigger a cutscene.

After that, go down to the second floor and then enter the second room on your right. Inside, you will find the Katana displayed in the middle of the room.

The floor above also has a gun if you need it, and the next room to your right contains the golden armor you need for the story, so pick it up while you’re here.

Location of the Sons of the Forest Machete

The Machete is located on a deflated raft on the north beach, just east of the cave where the Rebreather is located.

Sons of the Forest Gun Locations

In fact, we have come across two gun locations:

Gun Location 1

This gun is located on an inflatable raft off the western coast. It is marked on your GPS locator with a purple symbol.

Be careful when swimming towards the raft, as there is a shark in the area and it will attack you, even when playing in peaceful mode.

Gun Location 2

This gun requires more steps to obtain, so we only recommend obtaining it if you missed the first location and are near the area with the maintenance card in your inventory.

The second gun is located inside the same bunker as the Katana, Putter, and Golden Armor, on the floor above them. He is right next to a corpse and a redacted file on the ground.

Sons of the Forest Putter Location

You need the maintenance card to get the Putter.

The Putter is located in a bunker marked with a green circle on the southeast side of the island. The same place where you get the Golden Armor.

Use the maintenance card to go through a closed door near the entrance, then go down the stairs and through the door on the left to trigger a cutscene.

After the cutscene, exit the room and then take the second door on your right. The Putter is inside a corpse on the couch. You’ll also find some golf balls scattered around the room.

There is also a 3D printer in this room that you can use to create items like a flask to get water, or Tech Mesh to make Tech Armor, and Grapple Hooks to make zipline ropes.

Sons of the Forest Revolver Location

You will need the shovel to get the revolver.

Once you have the Shovel, go to the green circle in the northeast area of the island to find the Revolver in an underground bunker.

Use the shovel on the mud patch next to the surveying equipment to dig up the bunker, then go down the ladder. The revolver is on the ground next to a corpse.

Sons of the Forest Shotgun Location

First you must get the shovel to acquire the shotgun.

The Shotgun is located in the grave marked with a purple symbol on your GPS Locator in the northwest area of the island.

Use your shovel to dig under the wooden cross and you will eventually unearth the shotgun, as well as another GPS locator.

Sons of the Forest Slingshot Location

The Slingshot is located just outside the cave that leads to the shovel, on the western side of the island, just east of the large lake into which five rivers flow.
