How to build in Children of the Forest

The way building works in Sons of the Forest is a combination of following the instructions in the book with a little creativity on your part. Although this may seem difficult at first, this system actually allows you more freedom in building things.

The first method you can use to build structures in Sons of the Forest is based on stacking or connecting some materials, such as sticks, logs, and even skulls. This gives you a lot of freedom and space to use your creativity to a certain extent, mainly because you don’t need a recipe to create things. For example, sticks can be placed on the ground to make a small fence. Or you can use logs and cut them into different sizes to create a ramp. You can refer to your book and see the options displayed when you hold it in your right hand to get some ideas of what you can create.

The first step in using this method is to place a stick or log where you plan to build something. Then, while holding another item, interact with the first and see if a white arrow or dashed line appears. This indicates the direction in which you can place one element in relation to the other. Now you need to use your imagination to think about what you can create from there.

The second method is to use the recipes shown in your book when held in your left hand. In this mode, you will find many recipes for different types of structures that may be useful. In case you want to build one of them, you just have to select it and choose the place where it will be built. Doing so places a translucent version of the structure into which the necessary materials can be brought.

This method is less creative and has established steps you must follow to complete the project. If you are a solo player, you can ask Kevin to help you build the structure. He will get the materials and take them to the right place by himself.

How to craft in Sons of the Forest

To craft most items in Sons of the Forest, you must use the crafting mat that is part of your backpack. To access it, all you need to do is open the inventory and once in front of the rather large open backpack on the floor, you will see a central gray area and all your items around it. That’s the crafting mat. Please note that the mat can also be used for recharging or opening items, such as canned food and a flashlight.

Now, there are many things you can create with this system. The game will explain the recipe to some after you have collected all the necessary items for the first time. To check which recipes an item is a part of, simply select it, choose the combine command, and then place your cursor on the small gear at the top right of the mat. It will show what you can create with that specific item, as well as what additional materials you need. Once you have them all on the mat, simply activate the gear and the item is ready.

In case you want to try to mix the elements you have and see if you can create something, you should select a material and see if there is something other than gray. And since the game won’t tell you what items can be crafted, here’s a list of Sons of the Forest crafting recipes:

  • Molotov: 1x cloth, 1x vodka bottle.

Unlike normal items you can craft, printed items require a certain amount of resin to craft. These are the elements you can create with the 3D printer:

  • Arrow – 50 ml Resin
  • Bottle – 100 ml of Resin
  • Mask – 150 ml Resin
