Skyrim amiibo support explained: How to unlock Master Sword, Champion's Tunic and Hylian Shield with or without Zelda amiibo in Skyrim Switch

Skyrim amiibo support provides free items to bring your figure collection into the game.

Like Breath of the Wild, all amiibo will give you somethingbut only Zelda-specific amiibo give you the chance to receive one of three Zelda-themed items: the Master Sword, Champion’s Robe, or Hylian Shield.

Even if you have Zelda amiibo, they are not a guaranteed drop, but fortunately, you can also collect them without them if you know where to look.

How to use amiibo in Skyrim on Switch

It is not clearly explained how to use amiibo in the game. First, open the menu and go to Magic. Then, go to All or Powers and select amiibo to equip it. (Use the side buttons and make sure the arrow icon appears next to the list.)

Now, look at the ground or a nearby surface and press the Magic or Power button (by default, this should be the L button).

This will create a glowing aura, which will be active for about 15 seconds. Take your amiibo and press it against the bottom right side of the right Joycon (or the center of the Pro Controller) and then the chest will appear.

A couple of notes and limitations: You can only use each amiibo once every 24 hours in real time, so if you scan at 5pm, you’ll be able to scan after 5pm the next day.

Reloading a save doesn’t seem to allow you to rescan an amiibo, suggesting that each amiibo use applies to the entire profile.

If you plan to use amiibo frequently, remember that you can add the power as a “favorite” by pressing the X button in the Magic menu to save time.

Now that you’ve figured that out, what exactly do you get from each chest?

What amiibo are compatible with Skyrim Switch?

By introducing amiibo into the game, you will receive a chest with a number of items. The good news is that any amiibo will work, however, only certain amiibo will give you Zelda-themed items.

Special Zelda Chests

Tapping a Zelda-themed amiibo will drop a special gold and silver chest, accompanied by a familiar sound effect.

Open it to receive a variety of items, including basic weapons, armor and fruits, and a chance on a Master Sword, Champion’s Robe, or Hylian Shield; There is no guarantee that you will receive a Zelda item in each chest.

There is a chance that a special chest will give you a Zelda-themed item.

Of the six Zelda amiibo we used, two contained Zelda-themed items, suggesting a reasonable drop rate.

All of the items received had fairly standard armor and attack strength for our level one character, and there is a chance that they will adapt to you as you play. We’ll know for sure when players reach the end of the game.

If you’re not sure if your amiibo will give you a special chest, here’s a list of Zelda amiibo compatible with Skyrim Switch:

Regular chests

Any other amiibo besides the above will give you a normal amiibo chest. What you will receive inside are things of small quantity and value: some remains of food or fish, or a handful of gold.

There may be one or two rare items, but in our experience we haven’t found any yet, so you’d be better off spending your time exploring the world for valuable items.

A normal amiibo chest offers some fairly low value items.

How to get the Master Sword, Champion’s Tunic and Hylian Shield with or without Zelda amiibo in Skyrim Switch

If you don’t have any of the Zelda-themed amiibo above, don’t worry, as all of the Switch-exclusive items can be found in the game.

They are specifically located in the Throat of the World, which is the high mountain peak right in the center of the map.

You’ll climb the mountain fairly early as part of the main quest, where you’ll end up in High Hrothgar.

However, you must continue, to the Throat of the World itself, to find the chest. While there is a path that can take you from another direction, it is difficult to pass due to the strong winds.

Our recommendation is to take a horse to High Hrothgar and then climb the mountain from there.

We used a horse to climb to the top.

It is very difficult to do on foot, but if you are persistent on horseback, the steep rocks are manageable.

Once there, locate where the Wall of Words is in the Throat of the World, then head south.

You should then see a cave, with a gold and silver chest inside; This is the same color as the Zelda-themed chests you receive when you use certain amiibo.

Open it and you can grab the three Zelda-themed items: the Master Sword, Champion’s Tunic, and Hylian Shield.

As with the amiibo chest, all of the items received here had fairly standard armor and attack strength for our starting game character, and there’s a chance they’ll adapt to you as you play, something to consider before head here directly from the beginning of the game.
