Ring Ruins and how to complete A Trip through History in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The Ring Ruins in Kakariko Village have transformed the once sleepy village into a tourist destination in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

One of those tourists has a task for you: the side quest A Journey Through History. Completing a journey through history in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may not reward you with the most lucrative treasures, but you do gain additional insight into Hyrule’s past and what’s coming next.

Below, you’ll find out where each Ring Ruin location is and how to get the stone slab text to Bugut in Kakariko Village.

How to complete A Journey Through History in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The village ruins are locked until later in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, when you are completing the Sage of Light questline. A journey through time is the quest that you can undertake at any time simply by visiting each of the open ruins.

Talk to Bugut to start the quest or finish it if you explore the ruins first. He’s wandering around the center of Kakariko Village, usually between the Ring Garland stand and the general store. He wants to know what the inscriptions on the stone slabs inside the broken ruins say, but he is terrified of heights. That’s where you come in.

The mission description may sound like you need someone from the Zonai Expedition team to translate for you, but someone has already done the job. All you need to do is find the slab in three ruins and read the translation on a workbench near the slab. The fourth ruin is a bit different, as you can’t actually go inside to read the translation.

Ring Ruins Locations in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

You can visit the Ring Ruins in any order in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but the easiest one to start with is the southwestern ruin, as you can quickly access them from Makasura Shrine. Fast travel there, go up the hill and glide towards the ruins. You will see two elderly villagers discussing attack and defense. If you spoke to the general store owner, you can listen to his argument as part of finding him, although it is not required.

This ruin has a set of blue Bokoblins camping in the middle. Defeat them as you see fit and head to the back of the ruins. Turn right at the campfire and you will see the slab and translations in front of you.

Return to the shrine and this time head east. Glide over the town and follow the wooden walkway to the ruins.

Look north from these ruins, slide down the cliff near the forest and follow the edge of the forest until you see a large set of scaffolding ahead. Glide there, go up and follow the path to the ruins.

Exit and turn back towards the town. You’ll see Makasura Shrine ahead and the Forbidden Ruins a little closer. Turn right and go down the hill, avoiding the fence surrounding the forbidden ruins until you reach the edge of the cliff, in front of the giant ring above the waterfall.

The slab isn’t ruined this time, so you don’t have to climb it. Instead, glide over to the scaffolding and climb it. It eventually takes you to a large, open platform with someone sleeping on the stone slab. You can’t wake them up, nor do you need to. The translation is, as always, on a table next to you.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Ring Ruins Rewards

After visiting the four Ring Ruins accessible in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, float back to Kakariko Village and talk to Bugut again.

It rewards you with three Thunderwing Butterflies, which you can mix with monster parts to create an elixir that increases your resistance to electricity. The only other reward is the translated story of the stone slab, which sheds some light on past events in Tears of the Kingdom.
