Mystery Gift has returned in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
This feature, which first appeared in Pokémon Gold and Silver, allows you to download gifts, whether it’s a special Pokémon or a pre-order bonus.
In Pokémon Sword and Shield, it has additional features, such as connecting to your Poké Ball Plus and receiving Wild Area News.

How to access the Mysterious Gift in Pokémon Sword and Shield
Mystery Gift is available from the beginning of Pokémon Sword and Shield, and you can find it by opening the X menu.
You can access Mystery Gift through the X menu.
From there, select the Mystery Gift option, it’s the pink gift, and this will open the Mystery Gift menu.
You will now have access to three different options:
- Get a mystery gift
- Get the wild area news
- Take a walk with Poké Ball Plus
If your Nintendo Switch enters sleep mode while you are in any of the Mystery Gift menus, you will lose connection.
This will return you to the main X menu, forcing you to manually return to the Mystery Gift menu.
Get a Mystery Gift Explained in Pokémon Sword and Shield
If you’re looking for a special gift, whether it’s a pre-order bonus or a downloadable Pokémon, then “Get a Mystery Gift” is the right option for you.
Selecting this option will take you to a second menu where you will find five new options to choose from.
The first four consist of different ways to receive gifts, while the last option will tell you which mystery gifts you have received.

Remember: If your Nintendo Switch runs out of battery or you disconnect from the Internet while downloading a gift, you may not be able to recover it again.
Always make sure your Nintendo Switch has enough battery and is securely connected to the Internet before starting a download.
Get through local communication
This will search for mystery gifts using the local communication connection.
This does not connect you directly to the Internet and works like Y-Comm. If you are connected to the Internet, your Nintendo Switch will need to disconnect from its connection to use this feature.
This screen will appear when you search for gifts using local communication.
Obtain via Internet
This option will connect you to the Internet. Once you are logged in, a list of currently available mystery gifts will appear.
Select the gift you want from the menu and it will download to your Nintendo Switch.
Finally, you will see a list of what you download. This means that if you download a Pokémon, for example, a list of the Pokémon you downloaded will appear.

Get with Code/Password
This option will connect you to the Internet. Once you are logged in, you will be asked to enter your code or password for your gift.
After you successfully enter your code or password, you will be shown an option for your gift.
Select it to confirm your download and watch the gift arrive on your Nintendo Switch.
Finally, you will be shown a list of everything that gift contains. This means, for example, that if you download a special outfit, it will contain a list of each individual item of clothing for that outfit.
Enter your code or password correctly to receive your gift.
Get Battle Stadium Rewards
By selecting this option, you will be able to recover any prizes you have won by defeating other players online in the Battle Stadium, which can be accessed through the “VS” option in the X menu.
See mystery gifts
Here you will find a list of all the mystery gifts you have received.
Scrolling up and down the list will allow you to review all the important information about the various mystery gifts you have downloaded.
This information includes:
- The name of the mystery gift, for example, Gigantamax Meowth
- What the gift actually was: for example, a Meowth with the ability to Gigantamax
- The date and time you received this gift.
Check Mystery Gifts lists all the gifts you have received.
Get Wild Area News Explained in Pokémon Sword and Shield
Wild Area News updates the Pokémon Dens in your Wild Area with the latest spawn tables. This means that if a Gigantamax Pokémon is currently available for a limited time, updating your Wild Area News will allow them to appear.
Your Nintendo Switch must be connected to the Internet to update Wild Area News.
Use Wild Area News to update your Pokémon Den appearances.
Remember: Updating spawns does not guarantee that the Pokémon will appear. You may have to refresh your wild area news several times after completing some Max Raid battles.
Take a walk with Poké Ball Plus explained in Pokémon Sword and Shield
By selecting this option you will be able to place one of your Sword or Shield Pokémon in the Poké Ball Plus and take it for a beautiful walk through the real world. Doing so will allow you to accumulate points, which can be redeemed for a variety of rewards.
To transfer a Pokémon to your Poké Ball Plus, select this option and press the top button or control stick on the Poké Ball Plus. This will connect it to your game and allow you to select which Pokémon you want to take with you.
This screen will appear when you connect to your Poké Ball Plus.
If this is the first time you connect your Poké Ball Plus to a game, you will receive a Mew from your Poké Ball Plus.
