Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Sinistea locations, how to evolve into Polteageist, and Cracked Pot and Chipped Pot locations

Sinistea is a Ghost-type Pokémon that evolves into Polteageist when a Broken Pot or Splintered Pot is used in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

You don’t need both forms of the Gen 8 little teacup inhabitant to complete your Gen 9 Pokédex, and the form doesn’t affect its stats, but if you really want to catch them all, you’ll need both the fake and the Sinistea Ancient Forms.

Below we explain the locations of Sinistea, as well as where to find the Broken Pots and Chipped Pots you need to turn Sinistea into Polteageist in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Sinistea Locations in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

As detailed in its Pokédex entry, you can find Sinistea around Zapapico in the Eastern Province (Area Three) and around Alfornada in the Southern Province (Area Six). They like to appear among ruins and near towns and cities, and we have found that they appear much more frequently at night.

Of the two locations, we recommend searching for Sinistea around Zapapico at night at the beginning of your match (especially if you’re just searching for Sinistea Chips), as you only need to clear the Team Star Fire Crew base to get there. Sinistea may also be forced to appear in the eastern Pokémon Center.

If you’re farming Sinistea Chips or an Ancient Sinistea around Zapipico, walk that short path between the ruins and the east center at night, fight them, and then return to the Pokémon Center. When you check that path again, there will now be new spawns, which can force Sinistea to the area. Repeat this until you have finished farming.

You can also add checking the muddy area just south of Zapapico to your farming route, as we also found some Sinistea while antiquing here.

When you can reach Alfornada later in the game, the ruins above the city are very good for spawning Sinistea in large groups, and you may want to switch to farming them here.

Sinistea’s False Form and Old Form in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Explained

Most of the Sinistea you find are actually fakes, or to be exact, the teacups they reside in are fakes. These are the fake Sinistea.

An ancient Sinistea or Polteageist will have a small blue seal of authenticity at the bottom of its lower crest.

The only time you can clearly see this seal of authenticity (or lack thereof) is when you use the Let’s Go auto-battle feature to walk around with Sinistea or Polteageist, then move the camera to look at the bottom of the teacup.

Fortunately, there are no stats or move differences between a Phony Sinistea or Polteageist and an Antique, so don’t worry if you discover a fake. You have a real Sinsitea, but it turns out she lives in a knock-off teacup.

However, if you want an Ancient Sinistea, be prepared to catch a large number of them, as they rarely appear in the wild. However, using the Sinistea growing method detailed above can help speed things up.

There is a faster way to check if you have an old or fake Sinistea…

How to evolve Sinistea into Polteageist in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

To save a lot of time checking the bottom of your Sinistea, the best way to tell if you have a false form or not is to see if you can evolve Sinistea with Cracked Pot. This is because you need a broken pot to evolve a Phony Sinistea or a splintered pot to evolve an Antique Sinistea.

If you can’t evolve your Sinistea with a broken pot, congratulations! You have the real deal in your hands.

Being able to use Cracked Pot on a Sinistea means it is a fake form.

So, to turn your Sinistea into Polteageist, you will need one of the vessels, probably the Broken Pot.

Where to get broken and splintered vessels in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

To evolve a Sinistea, you must use a broken or chipped pot. A broken pot if it is a false form and a chipped pot if it is an ancient form.

The most consistent way to get a cracked or chipped boat in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is to go to the Port Marinada auction house. This is the western coastal city of Western Province (Area 2). In the same place you have to return Kofu’s wallet as part of the Aquatic Gym test.

The middle three auctioneers change what they sell approximately every two hours in-game. Then, you’ll have to wait until one of them mentions that they are selling a broken or chipped pot. Alternatively, you can go into your Switch’s settings and manually change the time yourself to force the auctions to change.

Buying a broken pot at the auction house is not the cheapest.

Changing the time worked for us, but it could affect other parts of the game that we haven’t discovered yet, so use this time trick with caution!

The price of pots can vary from auction to auction, but this is what a cracked and chipped pot cost us in Port Marinada:

  • Broken pot – 18,500
  • Chipped pot – 18,000
