Everything we know about Zapdos

Zapdos is a member of the legendary bird trio, sometimes referred to as the Winged Mirages, along with Articuno and Moltres. His name refers to both his writing and his location within the legendary trio of birds.

‘Zap’ is an obvious reference to a sound related to electricity. Meanwhile, ‘dos’ in Spanish means the number two, reflecting how Zapdos is the second member of the legendary bird trio. Articuno is the first, uno means one, and Moltres is the third, since his name ends in ‘tres’, which means three.

Interestingly, Zapdos has a type advantage over the other members of the legendary bird trio, due to Electric-type Pokémon being very effective against Flying-type Pokémon. This advantage even extends to Lugia, the trio’s teacher.

Zapdos appears to draw inspiration from the Thunderbird of Native American legends. Although myths surrounding the Thunderbird vary, it is generally described as a large bird that was created to fight underwater spirits and has the ability to create thunder by flapping its wings.
