The Higher They Fly… is the latest installment in the Team Go Rocket invasion story in Pokémon Go that began in July 2019 with A Worrying Situation.
There has been a hiatus in this series of missions, with the latest, A Development Between Bites of Eggs, being released in October 2020, but we return to helping Doctor Willow investigate the nefarious activities of Team Go Rocket.
During this mission, you will find yourself fighting the three leaders of Team Go Rocket (Cliff, Arlo and Sierra) and the crime lord himself, Giovanni.
You’ll also be rewarded with experience and a variety of items, including Mega Evolution Candy, for each quest step you complete.

How ‘The higher they fly…’ works in Pokémon Go
The Higher They Fly, which appeared in March 2021 at the beginning of Season of Legends, is the last of the Team Go Rocket questline.
To access this research mission, you must first complete the ‘tutorial’ mission, A Worrying Situation, and complete any previous Team Go Rocket missions you have already collected, such as A Development Between Egg Stings and The Shadowy Threat Grows.
Don’t worry if you’re too far back in the Team Go Rocket lineup, because once you’ve completed your current Rocket mission, you’ll automatically jump to The Higher They Fly…
Each Team Go Rocket mission is based on defeating the criminal organization’s grunts and purifying Shadow Pokémon, which can be found in invaded PokéStops around the world. You will also have to fight the leaders Arlo, Cliff and Sierra and, eventually, Giovanni.
Aside from these specific tasks, The Higher They Fly… works exactly the same as the other investigation missions, challenging you to complete a series of objectives in a specific order.
There is no time limit for The Higher They Fly… and after completing it, you will automatically begin the next Team Go Rocket research mission upon its launch.

You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
Tips for completing ‘The Higher They Fly…’ in Pokémon Go
Here are some tips to help you complete The Higher They Fly in Pokémon Go:
- Don’t forget to use Pinap Berries when catching Shadow Pokémon to ensure you collect enough candy to purify the Pokémon once it’s yours.
- Before fighting the three leaders of Team Go Rocket and Giovanni, be sure to check the possibilities of their lineups so that you can plan an effective counterattack team.
- Since both the Leaders and Giovanni have a selection of Pokémon they can use, it’s a good idea to research your team before properly defeating them. You can do this by using a Pokémon that is guaranteed to defeat its first Pokémon, which will always be the same, and, once you know what its second choice is, you can plan accordingly. Just remember that their lineup may change if you move to a different PokéStop.
- If you’re having trouble getting three good throws in a row, try finding a Pokémon with a large catch radius like Mr. Mime.
- Remember: you can now use a Remote Raid pass to participate in battles from the comfort of your home.
