Pokémon Go Pumpkaboo: How to get Gourgeist, Pumpkaboo size mechanic and Pumpkaboo Collection Challenge explained

Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist, its evolution, are two of the Gen 6 Pokémon that recently debuted in Pokémon Go, along with Phantump and Trevenant, during October 2021.

Unlike other Pokémon, there are different sizes of Pumpkaboo that you can hunt and catch, so pay attention to the type of Pumpkaboo you are trying to catch.

To celebrate this unique feature, you can complete the Pumpkaboo Collection Challenge during the 2021 Halloween event.

Below you will discover how to get and evolve a Pumpkaboo into Gourgeist in Pokémon Go.

How to get Pumpkaboo in the latest Pokémon Go event

Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist come from Gen 6 and first appeared in Pokémon Go in October 2021.

Pumpkaboo was released as part of the Halloween event and can be caught using a variety of methods:

  • In nature
  • One Star Raids

While you can catch a Pumpkaboo through a one-star raid during the 2021 Halloween event, we suggest saving your raid passes for more exciting Pokémon and focusing on finding one in the wild. Unless, of course, you need an average-sized Pumpkaboo for the Pumpkaboo Collection Challenge.

Pumpkaboos should appear fairly regularly during the 2021 Halloween event, although some sizes will be rarer than others, so you should be able to easily add them to your Pokédex.

As of this writing, it’s unknown what Pumpkaboo’s spawn rate will be after the 2021 Halloween event, but like most recently released Pokémon, we can expect it to be pretty rare. He can also appear only during the Halloween event similar to Yamask.

Pumpkaboo Gourgeist’s evolution in Pokémon Go explained

If you want to turn a Pumpkaboo into a Gourgeist, you will need to collect 200 Pumpkaboo candies or, thanks to trade evolution, you can receive a Pumpkaboo from another player to reduce the required candies to zero.

If you can’t use the trade evolution mechanic, you’ll have to collect 200 Pumpkaboo Candies yourself. Fortunately, the double catch and candy transfer bonuses that will be applied during the 2021 Halloween event will help you achieve this goal. Pineapple Berries are also a great way to increase the amount of candy you get from catching Pumpkaboo!

Another way to earn Pumpkaboo candy by having him as a friend and walking 5 km. Don’t forget to also use any leftover Rare Candy if you’re desperate for a Gourgeist.

Finally, you will also receive 10 Pumpkaboo candies for completing a challenge in the eleventh step of the Misunderstood Mischief special research mission.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Pumpkaboo sizes in Pokémon Go explained

What sets Pumpkaboo apart from other Pokémon in Pokémon Go is that it comes in four sizes: small, medium, large, and super.

When you evolve a Pumpkaboo, it will become a Gourgeist of the corresponding size; a medium-sized Pumpkaboo, for example, will evolve into a medium-sized Gourgeist.

To find out what size a Pumpkaboo is, you must try to catch it, and similar to shiny Pokémon, you will be able to easily determine what size Pumpkaboo you are trying to catch. By this we mean that a small Pumpkaboo will obviously be quite small, while the super large Pumpkaboo will be of considerable size.

You can also check your Pokédex to see what sizes of Pumpkaboo you have already caught.

You must pay close attention to the size of the Pumpkaboo you are trying to catch.

When it comes to trading, it’s important to note that if you’re trading for a Pumpkaboo size that you don’t currently have recorded in your Pokédex, then that trade will be counted as your daily special trade.

List of Pokémon from the Pumpkaboo Collection Challenge in Pokémon Go

The Pumpkaboo Collection Challenges work a little differently than the other Collection Challenges that have appeared in Pokémon Go, because instead of capturing a variety of Pokémon, you only focus on one.

This is because for this Collection Challenge you need to catch at least one of each size of Pumpkaboo, so be sure to touch every live pumpkin you see.

If you wish to complete this challenge, you must do so before Sunday, October 31 at 8 pm (local time), as after this time the Collection Challenge will not be available.

Here are all the Pumpkaboo sizes you need to capture to complete the Pumpkaboo Collection Challenge:

  • Small size: in the common wild encounter
  • Average Size: In the common wild encounter and in one star raids.
  • Large size: in the rare nature
  • Super Size – In the rare nature

Completing this challenge will reward you with five rare candies.

How Pumpkaboo Collection Challenges Work in Pokémon Go

The Pumpkaboo Collection Challenge will take place during the second half of the 2021 Halloween event, Ghoulish Pals, in Pokémon Go, meaning it will be available from Friday, October 22 to Sunday, October 31 at 8 p.m. ( local time).

Like previous collection challenges, you must track down all sizes of Pumpkaboo, either in the wild or through one-star raids. After doing so, you will receive the rewards for the Collection Challenge and they will be added to your Elite Collector medal.

Collection Challenges can be found on the “Today’s View” screen, accessed by pressing the Field Research button (the little binoculars) in the bottom right corner of the screen. You may need to scroll left if you’ve been looking at the field or special research screen.

When you catch a Pokémon in the Collection Challenge, the rooster will be marked on this list, helping you keep track of which Pumpkaboos you’re missing.

Pokémon will be removed from the list as you catch them.

You must complete the Pumpakoo Collection Challenge before 8 pm (local time) on Halloween itself if you want to earn all its rewards.

Good luck catching all of these Pumpkaboos!
