Pokémon Go Pikachu: How to get Pikachu as your starter and out in the wild

When you begin your journey in Pokémon Go, after creating a Trainer and setting a username (don’t worry, you can change the name and appearance later), Professor Willow will offer you one of three Pokémon to choose from.

Literally turn your back on these guys until you see Pikachu.

These three starters are Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, which veteran players will recognize are the same ones Professor Oak offers to players in the debut Pokémon Red and Blue entries.

However, in a nod to fans of Pokémon Yellow and the TV show, it is actually possible to have Pikachu as a starter Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

While it’s not the only way to get Pikachu into the game (he can be found in the wild in several locations, as well as in hatched eggs), it’s a little secret for those who want to bag the electric mouse right away, especially if you want see one of the game’s Easter eggs as part of the game’s Buddy system.

How to get Pikachu as a starter in Pokémon Go

When you start the game and are offered one of the three traditional starters, do not touch any of them. Instead, simply ignore all three and move away so they appear further and further away on the map. (This means you’ll have to start playing outside, rather than inside, so I hope you have your shoes on!)

Over time, when you are far enough away, these starters will reappear right in front of you in an attempt to get your attention. Again, literally stay away from them until they respawn nearby.

Do this enough times (three or four tries should be enough) and when the starting three appear next time, the original trio will be joined by a fourth, Pikachu, ready to capture.

If you want to see it in action, here’s GameExplain showing how it works:

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Detective Pikachu Returns event is currently underway. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

How to Find Pikachu and Other Starters in the Wild

Whichever Pokémon you initially choose, you’ll be able to obtain the other starters (and more of your chosen starter) by finding them nearby in the wild. While each starter Pokémon is a rare Pokémon, given that their final evolutions are among some of the best Pokémon in Pokémon Go, they are worth the effort. Pikachu in particular is worth hunting down, especially since it has its own Pokémon Go medal.

The trick to finding them is no different from other types of creatures. Be sure to follow the rules on how to identify and track nearby Pokémon to increase your chances of success. They can also be found by hatching one of Pokémon Go’s many 2, 5, and 10 km eggs, so keep walking around with those active incubators, as well as Pokémon nests, although this requires living in the correct area.

Over time, when you’ve captured enough of your chosen starting type, you can start evolving them into their respective evolutions and, hopefully, you’ll have that prized Charizard in no time.
