Pokémon Go Mysterious Components and Rocket Radar explained

Collecting mysterious components is an integral part of defeating Team Go Rocket and capturing powerful shadow Pokémon in the world of Pokémon Go.

Collect enough of these and you can create a Rocket Radar that will give you the opportunity to track and battle one of the leaders of Team Go Rocket, Arlo, Cliff and Sierra in Pokémon Go.

All of this leads to a rare opportunity to battle the original villain of the Pokémon franchise: the head of the organization, Giovanni.

What are mystery components in Pokémon Go?

There are many benefits to catching Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon Go, from the lore-based reasons to purify Pokémon to relieve them of their pain, to the fact that they deal 20% additional damage. These Pokémon are so strong that it is almost never correct to purify them.

There are three ways to get Shadow Pokémon, but the strongest ones belong to the leaders of Team Go Rocket, plus Giovanni, from whom you can catch legendary Shadow Pokémon (about once a month). But how do you earn the opportunity to do this? That all comes down to Mystery Components: you’ll earn the first one by defeating the Team Go Rocket Grunts you occasionally see spawning at PokéStops.

The in-game description of Mysterious Components is: ‘This appears to be what Team Go Rocker uses to hack PokéStops. Does it have another use?

You will receive this dialogue when you find this first mysterious component.

That second, much-telegraphed use is the creation of a rocket radar: collect six mystery components and you’ll see a notification saying, “These components look like they fit!”

Click ‘Combine Components’ and you will see a Rocket Radar form before your eyes.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! Its first event is A Paldean Adventure, which sees the true launch of Gen 9 and the special research mission A Paldean Adventure. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

How to find mysterious components in Pokémon Go

There are two ways to get Mystery Components in Pokémon Go: by fighting Grunts and by completing event-exclusive Field Research tasks, although you’ll almost always get them by defeating Grunts.

Grunts are the lowest rung of the Team Go Rocket hierarchy and can be found on dark blue, shaking PokéStops or Team Go Rocket periodic balloons. Each of them fits into a clearly telegraphed category: If you’re asked if you know how hot Pokémon’s fire breath can get, there’s a good chance it’s because they’re obsessed with Fire-type Pokémon.

There is no sure way to make Grunts appear at PokéStops, but Balloons appear at set times every day. Times vary depending on whether there is a Rocket event, so check your phone a couple of times a day if you’re looking for a specific Shadow Pokémon.

The second way to collect mysterious components is through field research tasks. These can be the field research you get from spinning PokéStops during certain events or it can be from an event-specific research task on your Today view screen. Either way, the end goal is the same: get six and combine them into a Rocket Radar.

One last thing to note is that if you have a rocket radar, you won’t be able to collect any more mystery components, no matter how many Grunts you defeat!

How to use Rocket Radar in Pokémon Go

To use the Rocket Radar, simply equip it from the item bag. Once equipped, the Team Go Rocket leaders will appear; If you don’t want them to appear, simply return to your bag and unequip the Rocket Radar. It’s also good to know that if you don’t have a Rocket Radar in your bag, you’ll be able to see how many mystery components you have instead.

As you may have noticed in the game’s description (and indeed its name), ‘You can use this to locate Team GO Rocket hideouts!’, there’s more to this than just equipping it. While you can walk around and hope for the best or simply wait for your next balloon (you’re guaranteed an encounter with the leader of Team Go Rocket in a balloon if you have a Rocket Radar equipped), you can also use the radar as a radar. So a little…

With Rocket Radar activated, return to the map screen and tap its icon in the top right corner of the screen. An overlay will appear showing you where the nearest Team Go Rocket leader is in Pokémon Go.

When you approach an invaded PokéStop, the rocket leader that inhabits it will appear on the map, as a Grunt.

Use the Rocket Radar to hunt down the leaders of Team Go Rocket.

This trick is particularly useful if you don’t feel like fighting that particular rocket leader. There are several reasons why you would want to target a particular Leader, from hunting down a specific Shadow Pokémon to trying to complete the research tasks necessary to take on Giovanni. Either way, the leader found at a PokéStop is random. It’s also very possible for the same leader to be at two nearby stops and appear on your screen twice at the same time!

So if you don’t like what you see, click on the Radar icon and search for the nearest Team Go Rocket leader.

Rocket Radars are reusable until a Rocket Leader is defeated. From there, you can start collecting mystery components again, create another rocket radar, etc.

If you need help taking on each Leader, our Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra page can help.

Good luck hunting down those evil Team Go Rocket leaders!
