Pokémon Go Mew event steps – how to unlock Mythical Pokémon Mew as part of ‘A Mythical Discovery’

Pokémon Go’s ability to catch Mew is completely different from any other creature we’ve seen in the game so far.

The game’s first Mythical Pokémon is available as part of a special research quest called A Mythic Discovery, where players must complete a series of objectives as part of a story-based quest line.

How the ‘A Mythical Discovery’ Mew event works in Pokémon Go

As part of a March 2018 update, Pokémon Go introduced new Research Missions, where players complete objectives to earn special rewards.

There are two types of these missions: field investigation and special investigation. It is the latter type that we will focus on, as while Field Research offers objectives that players can collect at any time, Special Research is a story-based quest line with specific steps.

The first special research mission is called ‘A Mythical Discovery’ and will see Professor Willow “take trainers further than ever into the world of Pokémon Go,” according to Niantic.

In the end? Players will receive Mew as a reward for completing it.

The mission is divided into eight stages, with multiple challenges to complete per stage.

Although they are similar to field research missions, the specific steps are fixed for each player, so if you don’t mind spoilers, you can plan ahead and learn what you need to do to complete them all and capture Mew, which It’s useful as you go. You’ll have to take on raid and gym battles along the way.

Otherwise, there are no restrictions on how quickly you can complete A Mythical Discovery, so as long as you meet the criteria for each stage, Mew could be yours in no time. That said, while there are no “hard” steps, some may take you some time to complete!

Mew Stats and What Else You Need to Know About Mythical Pokémon in Pokémon Go

Mew was the first Mythical Pokémon in the franchise, and also the first Mythical Pokémon in Pokémon Go, which are some of the most elusive creatures to find.

While Legendary Pokémon are powerful beasts that are captured in-game through specific steps, Mythical Pokémon can only be added to the game by acquiring them through real-world gifts and, later in the series, online events.

Beyond its availability, what made Mew special is its ability to learn any move in the game. In Pokémon Go, his moveset adopts some of these characteristics.

It can learn a variety of charged moves: Blizzard, Earthquake, Psychic, Focus Blast, Thunder, Fire Blast, Hyper Beam, and Solar Beam; His fast movement is restricted to hitting, which restricts his usefulness in battle. (Thanks to The Silph Road for clarifying them based on pre-release data.)

Although it can learn a variety of moves, its type, Psychic, is fixed, leaving it open to attacks from Bugs, Dark Ones, and Ghosts. Unlike Mewtwo, he also has fairly average stats.

Between this and Dark currently ranking high in the meta, Mew will most likely not be an effective creature in battle. However, its rarity alone makes it worth the time and effort to complete the “A Mythic Discovery” event.

Mew isn’t the only mythical Pokémon either. Like Legendary Pokémon, each generation adds one or two of these creatures, such as Celebi from Gen 2 and Jirachi and Deoxys from Gen 3, and it is assumed that these creatures will be added to the game as part of their own special research quests in sometime.
