Pokémon Go Lucky Friends and Lucky Pokémon – how to get Lucky Friends and guaranteed Lucky Pokémon

Pokémon Go Lucky Pokémon is another type of Pokémon to watch out for, joining Shinies and Forms as the Pokémon of Alola.

While the aforementioned types only fill out your Pokédex, Lucky Pokémon status also provides a direct benefit: it allows that creature to grow at a much cheaper cost than regular Pokémon.

Meanwhile, Lucky Friends is added, acting as another way to send and receive Lucky Pokémon.

Lucky Friends is a special friendship status that guarantees you a lucky Pokémon.

Becoming lucky friends in Pokémon Go works as follows:

  • There is a chance to be lucky friends when you are someone’s best friend.
  • When you are lucky friends with someone, the next trade you make will result in both of you becoming lucky Pokémon.
  • You have a daily attempt to become Lucky Friends by doing one of the following actions: opening a gift, teaming up in raids or gym battles, or participating in a trainer battle (essentially anything that would normally result in leveling up your friendship ).
  • If you are successful, the game will notify you that you are lucky friends and indicate it in your friends list.
  • Once the exchange is complete, you will go back to being “normal” best friends.

Other things to know about Lucky Friends include:

  • You can become a best friend’s Lucky Friends more than once, but no more than once a day.
  • The chances of becoming Lucky Friends, at least in the early stages, seem to be around 5% according to reddit.
  • The Lucky Friends status appears to last as long as you make the next trade, so feel free to continue sending and receiving gifts or participating in trainer battles until the next time you meet and can trade. It does not expire that day.
  • It is possible to have more than one Lucky Friend active at a time. (Thanks blackpudding2000 on reddit for confirming).
  • At the release of the feature, there was an issue where some trades with Lucky Friend would not result in Lucky Pokémon; This has already been solved:

Trainers, the bug that caused a small number of lucky trades to not result in lucky Pokémon has been resolved. Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention and we apologize for the error.

What are lucky Pokémon in Pokémon Go?

Lucky Pokémon is a special status, separate from Forms or Shinies, that Pokémon can have attached to them.

If a Pokémon is lucky, the Stardust needed to boost it is reduced by 50%. The feature is particularly welcome as Stardust is one of the rarest resources in the game, especially in high-level games, allowing creatures to reach maximum CP at a lower cost.

Additionally, the number of lucky Pokémon you’ve caught will appear in the Pokédex (along with “seen” and “caught”), as well as on the Pokémon statistics screen, with a unique background:

Lucky Pokémon come from the game’s trading feature. When you trade, there is a chance that both creatures will have the Lucky status afterwards.

The success rate is not yet known, but the longer the Pokémon has been in storage (in other words, the longer you have had the Pokémon), the greater the chance it will become Lucky in the end.

So if the Pokémon are from the game’s 2016 release, your chances of them being lucky will be much higher than if they were caught this year. (Actually, there may be a 100% chance; read the next section to see how.)

If they are caught in different periods, it is suspected that the game will take as its calculation the average age of both creatures in trade, since both will or will not be lucky together.

That’s not to say that a newly caught Pokémon can’t get lucky: community members have had success trading recent catches. But the older it is, the better, and since you can only trade one of a specific Pokémon, you’ll want those chances to be as high as possible.

How to get guaranteed lucky Pokémon in Pokémon Go

In September 2018, developer Niantic made some changes to increase your chances of receiving lucky Pokémon.

If you have discovered fewer than 10 Lucky Pokémon, then a Pokémon in your inventory captured in July or August 2016 (in other words, when the game was first released) will become 100% Lucky after a trade.

To clarify, if any of the coaches have had less than 10, then both Creatures in the trade will be lucky. So in theory, even if you have more than 10, if you can find others with less than 10, you can still get guaranteed lucky Pokémon. Thanks to the Silph Road reddit for clarifying this!

It’s also worth noting that as part of this change, all of Lucky Pokémon’s stats have now become stronger. They previously started around the 10/10/10 mark, and have now been increased to 12/12/12 (the highest you can get is 15/15/15).

Otherwise, the other method is to be lucky friends of the player you are trading with.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Halloween event has returned, bringing with it Greavard and Houndstone. Party Play, Pokémon Go’s multiplayer feature, is here, along with the Welcome Party quest. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

What else do you need to know about Lucky Pokémon?

There are a few other little details you should know about Lucky Pokémon:

  • Lucky Pokémon have high IVs, starting 12/12/12 for HP, Defense, and Attack. This means you can turn a trash Pokémon into a more competitive one!
  • There doesn’t seem to be a limit to the number of lucky Pokémon you can get in a day. It was originally thought so, but reports from Silph Road suggest either a limit was lifted or it was incorrect information.
  • Searching ‘Lucky’ in your Pokémon collection will reveal your Lucky creatures at a glance (thanks @ScubaSkeet on Twitter for confirming!)
  • Lucky Pokémon can also be Shiny, Shadow and Purified.
