Pokémon Brilliant Diamond Shining Pearl version differences, exclusive Pokémon and new features

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have, like all mainline Pokémon games, a list of exclusive Pokémon versions.

These Pokémon can only be caught in the specific game they appear in, so if you want to complete the Pokédex, you must trade with a player who has the opposite version of yours.

Since Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are remakes, they have a number of features that have been reworked or simply did not appear in the original Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s new and returning features explained

Whether you’ve played the original installment or are visiting the Sinnoh region for the first time, you’ll discover a host of new and reworked features in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Let’s start with the Pokétch: If you played Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, you’ll remember that the Pokétch lived on the bottom screen of the Nintendo DS. Since this is impossible on Nintendo Switch, you will now be able to activate the Pokétch whenever you need it.

The Pokétch still retains all of its original features, such as the Notepad, clock, dowsing machine, and the very useful Friendship Checker.

However, the biggest change to the Pokétch is related to how the hidden moves in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl work. Instead of creating an HM slave, you can use the Pokétch to summon wild Pokémon and perform moves like Slash, Surf, or Rock Climb.

Diamond and Pearl’s Underground has also been reworked into Grand Underground. You’ll still be able to dig through walls for items like fossils, build a secret base, and play alongside other players in Grand Underground, but there’s a new feature you can enjoy: Pokémon Hideouts.

Pokémon Hideaways are special environments in Grand Underground where different Pokémon live: some appear naturally in the Sinnoh region, others do not. Try experimenting with different Pokémon statues in your secret base, because they seem to have an effect on the hiding places you find.

Pokémon Contests have also returned in the form of Super Contest Shows, which last appeared in Pokémon Platinum. Compete in five different categories, such as Cuteness and Intelligence, in four different ranks (Normal, Great, Ultra and Master) to show how special your Pokémon is. You can compete against NPCs or your friends over the Internet.

Each Pokémon is judged based on three different evaluations: Visual, Dance and Movement. Visual covers how well you’ve trained a certain condition, such as Beauty, to a Pokémon by giving it Poffins. It also covered the capsule decoration you gave its Poké Ball, which is a returning feature from previous Pokémon games.

Dancing, meanwhile, involves completing a rhythm mini-game and incorporates the Move assessment. As your Pokémon dances, it will have the opportunity to use a competition move, and if you time it right, you can create a chain of moves for extra points.

As mentioned above, capsule decoration, which we last saw in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, has also returned. You can add up to 20 stickers (from a choice of 90) to a Poké Ball to give your Pokémon a special touch when it goes into battle!

The Pal Park of Diamond and Pearl has been replaced by Ramanas Park where, by placing boards in specific rooms, you can find legendary Pokémon. While some legendary Pokémon will appear in both games, others are exclusive to a specific version, such as Lugia which only appears in Shining Pearl.

You will gain access to Ramanas Park once you have defeated the Elite Four and entered the Hall of Fame. It also requires updating for both games released on Friday, November 19, 2021.

You can also earn a number of Mythical Pokémon throughout the game: Mew and Jirachi can be earned if you have a save file of a certain Nintendo Switch Pokémon game on your console, and a Manaphy Egg is available as an early-purchase bonus.

Amity Square in Hearthome City also received a small update, allowing you to bring six Pokémon to its grounds. Here you can make Poffins and, after having visited them, a Pokémon in your party can follow you throughout the Sinnoh region.

The ability to buy clothes and customize your sneaker is also back!

Finally, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will be compatible with Pokémon Home in 2022.

I hope you enjoy exploring the Sinnoh region!
