National Milk Day is celebrated on November 26 in honor of Dr. Verghese Kurien’s birthday. Dr. Verghese Kurien, who also created dairy farming as India’s largest self-sustaining industry, is credited with starting India’s “white revolution.”
National Milk Day: History
Together, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Indian Dairy Association (IDA) and 22 state level dairy federations decided to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Verghese Kurien on November 26, 2014. Dr. Kurien is considered the founder of India. White Revolution. Consequently, the first National Milk Day was celebrated on November 26, 2014.
National Milk Day: Importance
The largest producer of milk is India. In honor of the 101st birthday of Dr. Verghese Kurien, also known as the Dairyman of India and the “Father of the White Revolution in India”, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying commemorates “National Milk Day” on 26 November.
Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri tasked Dr. Kurien with setting up the National Dairy Development Board in 1965. Dr. Kurien also administered the Delhi Milk Scheme by adjusting prices and founded the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) in 1979. Started a farmer-run business and helped India become self-sufficient in edible oils. He obtained the titles of “Dairyman of India” and “Father of the White Revolution” thanks to his ideas and contributions.
