If there is something that crosses borders faster than air, it is music. One of those musicians who recently passed away but leaves behind so many pieces of music to appreciate is Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. The man crossed multiple cultural and musical boundaries and achieved an extraordinarily successful career. He helped build the foundations of electro, synth pop and techno as one third of Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Ryuichi Sakamoto was born in Tokyo on January 17, 1952. Since he was a child, he had a great inclination for music, which is why he began playing the piano at the tender age of three. He then began performing regularly in jazz bands when he was a high school student. The man was exposed to his audience, from the Beatles to Beethoven. Sakamoto was also interested in and greatly influenced by avant-garde cinema. After graduating from Yellow Magic Orchestra, he pursued electronic music at Tokyo Art University.

The man has won not one but many important awards in his career for films such as Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and The Last Emperor. Furthermore, his exemplary albums such as Beauty and Neo Geo also received great recognition, as he experimented with these albums by fusing global, classical and pop textures. The man featured his compositions and predominantly showcased the beauty of the classical genre with notable releases like BTTB and 1996. The musician never stopped contributing music to television series, art installations, films, and even video games. Ryuichi Sakamoto worked extensively with glitch artists such as Alva Noto, Christopher Willits, Fennesz and Taylor Deupree, in the 21st century. The man received high praise for experimental works like Async and 12 as well.
Back in the YMO days, he also released his first solo work with Thousand Knives Of. Two years after this, the man returned to Unit B-2. After the dissolution of YMO in 1983, the man chose the path of solo and collaborative work as a full-time venture. Once he started doing that, he introduced Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, his commercial and artistic breakthrough that same year. This was the film in which the man also starred alongside David Bowie.
The man’s work never went unnoticed, and proof of this is The Last Emperor, a work for which he received the Oscar, the Grammy and the BAFTA award for best original soundtrack.
